Amrita Devi was a female villager who could not bear to witness the destruction of both her faith and the village's sacred trees. She decided to literally hug the trees, and encouraged others to do so too, proclaiming: “A chopped head is cheaper than a felled tree.” Bishnois from Khejri and nearby villages came to the forest and embraced the trees one by one to protect them from being cut down. As each villager hugged a tree, refusing to let go, they were beheaded by the soldiers. This voluntary martyrdom continued until 363 Bishnoi villagers were killed in the name of the sacred Khejarli forest.
Once word got back to the King about this activity he rushed to the village and apologized, ordering the soldiers to cease logging operations. Soon afterwards, the maharajah designated the Bishnoi state as a protected area, forbidding harm to trees and animals. This legislation still exists today in the region.
In memory of the 363 Bishnois, who died protecting their dear trees, a number of khejri trees are planted around the area, which is still notably lush and rich with animal life. The Bishnoi sacrifices became the inspiration for a much larger Chipko movement that is still growing today, in which villagers physically embrace trees to save them from logging.

This year has been very rewarded to me. Two months ago I started a new experience in life; I met a person from my church, she invited to me to go with her to preach god's word to a bunch of homeless. At the beginning, I was a little scared because homeless people do not have the best reputation in town but at the end I accepted.
That morning my friend picked me up really early, we had to organize the place, take the chairs, set the table, prepare the snacks, test the equipments I mean the microphone and the speakers. When we have all ready, the homeless people started to arrive. I felt a little bit weird. I never thought to be there but it happened.
They started to pray and something happened, I could see God's mercy on the face of those people. They were there enjoying that moment and accepting those beautiful words. I think independence is great if you have a good sense of responsibility and moral integrity. It helps to further self-reliance and resourcefulness but independence isn't for everybody, and I definitely don't believe that it is a human need. It's more of a privilege...independence is something that's earned.
For example, you don't see any convicted felons or psych ward patients walking around freely without supervision during any given time of the day. If you do, they've either escaped or they or are being monitored from time to time. People who act in ways that portray the fact that they are irresponsible or dangerous do not need independence. Likewise, people who are unable take care of themselves are also dependent on others to live. Babies, seniors, and people with disabilities all fit into this category.
Although I agree with the idea that everyone should be able to think by themselves and make their own decisions...what if those decisions are self-destructive and can put people in danger? Freedom without supervision would be anarchy. Period. And even though America was founded on freedom, it is still very much limited.
Independence is great but it is not a fundamental or universal human need. It is earned, wanted, and coveted but it is not for everybody.
