What is imagery?

In poetry, novels, and other types of writing, imagery is a literary method that uses vivid description to evoke an image or idea in the reader's mind. Language-based imagery strives to convey the thrilling and emotional experience of reading a book, not just to paint a picture.

By drawing the reader deeper into the text and engaging their senses, imagery can enhance the reading experience. Through detailed descriptions, writers can evoke the senses of the reader's taste, smell, touch, hearing, or sight. Other literary strategies like similes, metaphors, or onomatopoeia can also be used to produce imagery. Language that appeals to the reader's senses is referred to as imagery. The writer conveys ideas by evoking those senses through touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight.

In Matched by Ally Condie

Compare and contrast the benefits and negatives of the government taking control in this way.

Answers

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ♡ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

In Matched by Ally Condie, the government is very strict and your whole life is controlled by the government.

For example; you have to die at 80; your husband/wife is chosen by the "matching machine" (I forgot what it is called); you are given three pills (which the red one you must take if instructed and you can't take if they don't say so; If you don't do what they say, you will be punished; You can't really choose your life; and the things you can decide, your not ever allowed to change.

There are many negatives to this kind of government control. In Matched, the government requires you to die at 80 years old. Maybe it doesn't matter, since old people (in this book) can't really make any more accomplishments, but who doesn't want to live more? Also, your wife/husband is chosen by a machine. Would if you are not "meant to be" or would if the machine made a mistake? In the book, Cassia did not end up falling in love with Xavier. The machine made a mistake. Also, the pills are not good. The red one erases your memory. You can only take it is the Society says so, and you must take it. The blue pill kills you. Also, if you don't do what they chose for you, you are punished.

But maybe life is simpler this way. If you are killed at 80, it might be less painfull than you dying of cancer or something. Plus you won't really accomplish anything after you get old. Also, if the machine rarely ever make mistakes, you won't have to get heartbroken so many times to find the "one" because the machine already knows. About the pills, the red one erases your memory. If something bad happened, you would have to take it and forget all about that. But usually, the things the Society wants you to forget about are about rebels and their plan. The blue pills are supposed to kill you, which isn't good at all, but it might be a lesson for not being too greedy.

Overall, I think there are more negative of the government taking control in this way. People are supposed to be free; they should be able to do whatever they want; after all, it is their life. The government wants everyone to be controlled their way, so if you disobey or do not follow, the punishments are brutal. They also don't want people to know about the rebels and/or their plans, so they force people to take the red pills. And the blue pills kill you.

The government in Matched by Ally Condie has a lot of negatives and some positives.

How does the author support the main idea in this paragraph?
-with a claim that the narratives show brutal living conditions
-with three titles of stories from the brothers Grimm
-with an example that shows why the stories are fit for children
-with an example that shows a specific brutal living condition

Read the excerpt from "How the Grimm Brothers Saved the Fairy Tale."

Turning to the tales of the first edition, a reader might notice that many of the stories such as "The Hand with the Knife,” "How Some Children Played at Slaughtering,” and "The Children of Famine,” have nothing to do with fairies or happy endings. Instead, these are stark narratives about brutal living conditions in the nineteenth century. For instance, "The Children of Famine” begins this way:

Once upon a time there was a woman with two daughters, and they had become so poor that they no longer had even a piece of bread to put in their mouths. Their hunger became so great that their mother became unhinged and desperate. Indeed, she said to her children, "I’ve got to kill you so that I can get something to eat.”

Millicent's tense posture evaporated, replaced by a genuine smile. Upon reflection, Millicent realized that initiations didn't really bother her. Thereafter, Millicent said yes to each initiation task without question. Millicent found that handling the tasks was much easier than she'd thought.

Answers

Answer:

The revision that best uses direct characterization is:

A. Millicent's tense posture evaporated, replaced by a genuine smile.

Explanation:

Indirect characterization happens by inference, so to speak. Through the character's actions or speech, we get to infer what that person is like or how she feels and thinks. Direct characterization, on the other hand, relies on the author's description of the character. It is the narrator telling us what that person is like - her desires, her passions, her physical appearance, her emotional state and so on. That is why, among the options provided, the one that best uses direct characterization is letter A. It is the author describing Millicent's posture. The other options show Millicent's actions, thoughts, and words.

Answer:

The correct answer is option 2 Inaugurated in 2009, Barack Obama had won the presidential election in 2008.

Explanation:

Let's explain a little better what a fragment in a sentence is.

Fragments are indicators that something is missing in the sentence. Usually these sections have been extracted from the main clause. That would be the case of sentence number 2, which could be complete if we wrote it in the following way:

Barack Obama won the presidential election in 2008 and was inaugurated in 2009.

Given this information we can say that the correct answer is option 2.
