Subject: Health Hazards Caused By Junk Food

Dear Sir/MADAM:

I write to your good self to express my deep concern over the problem of health hazards caused by junk food. The tsunami of junk food has struck the entire world.  It has wreaked havoc on the health of people, especially of children. Obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cholesterol imbalance, headaches, depression, dental problems, etc, never ever abounded as much before the advent of junk foods as they do now.

There is nothing good that can be said about junk food! There is little nutritional value in them. These foods are often high in calories yet offer little or no nutritional value. When fast food frequently replaces nutritious foods in your diet, it can lead to poor nutrition, poor health, and weight gain. Tests in lab animals have even shown a negative effect in short duration diets. Being overweight is a risk factor for a variety of chronic health problems including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Through the medium of your esteemed daily I appeal to the Health Ministry to look into the matter and take prompt preventive measures in this regard. Junk food outlets should either be banned or made inaccessible to children so easily. We can’t just allow the fast food companies to play with the health of children of our nation. I also appeal to people to abstain themselves from eating too much of junk food. I am hopeful you will give my ideas enough space in your newspaper. Thanking you.

Yours faithfully,

Also, many of them have windows on the front, so you can watch the fire burn. This has two advantages: It's pleasant to look at, and you can see if more wood needs to be added. Woodstoves burn very efficiently, as you can tell if you look inside after one is done burning. You'll find there's almost nothing left! In a regular fireplace, there are always pieces of wood and paper that didn't burn completely. Woodstoves can keep an entire small house warm in winter because they throw off so much heat. Of course, I was staying somewhere once where the woodstove was so efficient that the place got way too hot! We had to open all the windows and doors until it cooled down, which sort of defeated the purpose. But overall, I'm still a big fan of woodstoves. I wish I had one of my own.

My grandmother, whom we affectionately call Nani, is the best baker I know. If Lebron James is the king of the basketball court, then she is the queen of the kitchen. Her soft, warm chocolate chip cookies are better than Mrs. Field's or Rachel Ray's. Her key lime pie is the perfect delicate balance between sweet and savory. Her recipe box is her treasure chest, full of secret recipes handwritten on colorful notecards. Nani mixes and stirs and measures with as much care as a scientist in a lab. Everything tastes better if it's made by Nani, for everything she bakes is made with love. In three to five sentences, explain the writer's word choices, including analogy and allusion. Explain the effect of word choice on the tone. (4 points)

Excerpted from Book V of The Odyssey

by Homer

There he crept beneath two sh(oots of olive that grew from a single stock- the one an ungrafted s(ucker, while the other had been grafted. No wind, however squally, could break through the cover they afforded, nor could the sun's rays pierce them, nor the rain get through them, so closely did they grow into one another. Ulysses crept under these and began to make himself a bed to lie on, for there was a great litter of dead leaves lying about - enough to make a covering for two or three men even in hard winter weather. He was glad enough to see this, so he laid himself down and heaped the leaves all round him. Then, as one who lives alone in the country, far from any neighbor, hides a brand as fire-seed in the ashes to save himself from having to get a light elsewhere, even so did Ulysses cover himself up with leaves; and Minerva shed a sweet sleep upon his eyes, closed his eyelids, and made him lose all memories of his sorrows.

By exploring court cases where black women were either not allowed to make claims on behave of all women, or on behave of all blacks, but were selectively allowed to make claims as black women, Crenshaw argued that black women were erased by a single-axis framework that focused on either black men as blacks or white women as women. She argued that not only were black women left out, but that the experience of racism and sexism for black women could not be wholly separated or added together. She believes that only by centering the experience of black women in the analysis can racism and sexism be better understood.1. Crenshaw (1981): Used 3 important Title VII cases that illustrate how antidiscrimination doctrine erases Black women's distinct experiences.(1) DeGraffenreid v General Motors. Suit brought against GM. Evidence revealed that GM didn't hire Black women prior to 1964 and that all Black women hired after 1970 lost their jobs in a seniority-based layoff during a recession. Court rejected the plaintiff's attempt to bring a suit on behalf of Black women because there wasn't precedent that stated "Black women are a special case to be protected from discrimination" and thus the lawsuit could only be examined from either race or sex discrimination, not both. The court reasoned, creating "new classes of protected minorities, governed only by the mathematical principles of permutations and combination, clearly raises the prospect of opening the hackneyed Pandora's box."Females had been hired so the sex discrimination was dismissed, and was put in with another racial discrimination case. Black women are protected only to the extent that their experiences coincide with those of either of the two groups.(2) Moore v Hughes Helicopter, Inc. Typical of cases where courts refused to certify Black females as class representatives in race and sex discrimination actions because the court doubted her "ability to adequately represent white female employees." Thus for evidence of discrimination under disparate impact theory, Moore could only draw from a small statistical pool of Black females only (rather than including also white women and Black men).(3) Payne v Travenol. Case in which two Black female plaintiffs alleging race discrimination brought a class action suit on behalf of all Black employees at a pharmaceutical plant. Ultimately, Black women were awarded back-pay and general race discrimination was found. However, Black men were not extended the same remedy, as the court argued that sex disparities between Black men and Black women create conflicting interests that Black women can't represent Black men adequately.
