What caused the conservative backlash of the 1920s?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:  Since a lot of the culture was changing rapidly in the 1920s, there would be backlash by some group of people. For this era, conservatives attempted to stop this more "morally loose" generation from living their lives.

One example is the 18th Amendment, since so many people began drinking, this amendment was pushed so that the production, transport, and sale of alcohol became illegal. Of course, this amendment did not hinder the population from obtaining alcohol, but this goes to show that the conservatives were making an effort in stopping something that they thought was morally wrong.

Another example of conservative backlash is the Scopes Trial. A man attempted to teach evolution in his science class, violating Tennessee's Butler Act, which made teaching human evolution unlawful. This was the beginning of the never ending arguments between modernists and fundamentalists.

However, California farms typically hired seasonal workers only when they were needed, and used farm workers to perform specific tasks rather than learn how to become farmers in their own right." --John Holland, Modesto Bee, September 30, 2008.

Why did people migrate west during the Dust Bowl?

Due to bank foreclosures, about a quarter of the population was compelled to leave their farms and ranches. Several families packed everything they possessed into cars and trucks and headed west in order to feed their kids and raise them in healthier environments. California became a well-liked vacation spot.

The precise number of Dust Bowl refugees is still up for debate, but according to Christy Gavin and Garth Milam, writing in California State University, Bakersfield's Dust Bowl Migration Archives, as many as 400,000 migrants may have traveled west to California during the 1930s.

Farmers from the Midwest left the area in great numbers as a result of the Dust Bowl, and many of them went to California in search of employment.
