Space Junk!

Imagine small pieces of debris hurtling through space at up to 22,300 miles per hour—faster than a speeding bullet. Next, envision those pieces of debris colliding with each other, explosively creating even more smashed bits, as they continue zooming through space. Now, try to imagine a cloud of this debris encircling our planet.

You have just created a picture of space junk.

“Space junk” is a term used to describe the different bits and pieces of debris that orbit earth and other planets at mind-boggling speeds.

What is this “junk,” and how did it end up in outer space?

This “junk” is actually debris from objects sent into space. It includes everything from parts of space shuttles to satellites. Pieces from rocket launchers, bits of metal fallen off of satellites, nuts and bolts, and even chips of paint are all considered space junk. The Space Surveillance Network, a group that keeps track of the debris, has seen garbage bags, lens caps, and even a spatula!

Currently, there are around 900,000 pieces of debris between 1 centimeter and 10 centimeters in length orbiting in our space system, and this number is growing. The pieces vary in size from softball-sized to those the size of marbles, or even smaller. Additionally, there are millions of debris pieces too small to measure.

But isn’t space HUGE? Isn’t there enough room for these little bits of junk to pass each other?

Although space is extremely vast, most of the junk that is worrisome is orbiting earth. It is estimated that there are about 22,300 bits of trash the size of golf balls, in addition to half a million smaller pieces whizzing around earth in the “low earth orbit.” This means that the junk is within 1,250 miles of earth’s surface. Sharing this space are active satellites, so there is growing concern about how to keep the satellites from being hit by the debris. There have been a few incidents where this has already happened. For example, in 1996, some debris from a French rocket damaged a French satellite. Surprisingly, the rocket had been launched ten years previously! In 2009, a non-operational Russian satellite smashed into an American satellite. This collision added another 2,000 pieces of junk to the growing pile of space debris.

Scientists have labored for years to try to protect both active satellites and the International Space Station (ISS), a space laboratory run by astronauts from different nations. To protect the ISS, scientists have developed the capability to maneuver the station out of harm’s way. There are also emergency plans in place to protect the astronauts working at the ISS. These plans would isolate the crew to another part of the station to keep them safe in the event of a collision.

Still, these measures do not solve the problem of what to do about space junk.

In our modern world, we have become more and more dependent on satellites to help us with many things. Among these are communication systems, weather predictions, and navigation. The more we rely on advanced technology, the more likely it is that we will send additional satellites into space. It is not realistic to assume that the number of items launched into space will decrease.

Scientists are working on solutions to deal with the problem. For example, Japan has designed a device that looks like a giant rope with a 444-pound weight attached to one end. The weight could swing around and basically knock debris out of orbit. Then it would burn up in earth’s atmosphere. Other ideas for debris removal have included harpoons, giant magnets, and nets that would capture the debris. Some solutions propose an end-of-life plan for future launches, in which the debris would be sent farther into space or destroyed.

Because humans’ interest in exploring space continues to grow, there is little chance that the number of objects in space will decrease. However, as people become more aware of the problem of space junk, the same energy dedicated to exploring space must be directed toward creative ways of cleaning it up.

Question 1
Part A

According to "Space Junk!," what will most likely happen to the amount of junk in space?

The amount will fluctuate.

The amount will grow.

It will stay the same.

It will decrease over time.
Question 2
Part B

Which evidence from the text best supports the answer to Part A?

"Still, these measures do not solve the problem of what to do about space junk. "

"The more we rely on advanced technology, the more likely it is that we will send additional satellites into space."

"In our modern world, we have become more and more dependent on satellites to help us with many things."

"The weight could swing around and basically knock debris out of orbit."

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

A- The amount will grow.

B- "The more we rely on advanced technology, the more likely it is that we will send additional satellites into space."

Explanation:

Space junk is the name given to inoperable objects in Earth's orbit. These include rocket stages, unusable satellites, rubbish from the destruction of spacecraft and satellites, and other objects dangerous to spacecraft in orbit. 95% of the observed objects in orbit are junk.

Particularly those pieces that continue to orbit around the earth can be a problem, depending on the orbit. The fact that a flaky paint can be a problem is due to the enormous speeds: in a low orbit the speed is about 8 km / s, and the relative speed in a collision can be even higher. An artificial moon can be damaged by colliding with a small object.

Answer 2

Answer:Any piece of equipment or debris left in space by humans is known as space rubbish or space debris. It can be used to describe large objects like satellites that have failed or failed and were left in orbit after their missions.

What is Space junk?

It can also be used to describe tiny objects like paint flecks or debris that have fallen off a rocket. The Moon has also been left with some trash created by humans.

All space junk is the result of us launching objects from Earth, and it remains in orbit until it re-enters the atmosphere.

Some objects in lower orbits of a few hundred kilometres can return quickly. They often re-enter the atmosphere after a few years and, for the most part, they'll burn up - so they don't reach the ground.

Therefore, Any piece of equipment or debris left in space by humans is known as space rubbish or space debris. It can be used to describe large objects like satellites that have failed or failed and were left in orbit after their missions.

Which detail helps readers create a mental picture of august

Answers

Answer:

C. August's mouth goes straight across when he smiles.

Explanation:

We are looking for a specific description of what August looks like. Just knowing that August smiled isn't doing us any good here because everyone smiles differently, how can we get an accurate pictures of August's smile in our head if there's so many variations of smiles?

This means we can cross out the first two choices since they don't provide much information about what August looks like. When comparing choice C and choice D, we see that C specifically explained that August's smile looks like his mouth just goes in a straight line, which paints a very specific image in our heads. Choice D talks about a feeling of almost laughing, but feelings aren't a physical feature so we can't really visualize it. This is way C is the best answer.

C.) august mouth goes straight across when he smiles !!!!!!!!

With Arizona's diverse topography, the temperature average for southern Arizona, including the Phoenix
metropolitan area, is lows of 30°F in the winter to over 100°F in the summer. In the northern portion of the
state, the temperature fluctuates from 20°F to 95°F. The highest temperature recorded was 127°F. The lowest
temperature recorded was -40°F. With such extreme highs and lows, what can people do to consistently
lower global warming in this state? Think in terms of the environment.

Answers

Answer:

Arizona will always high an extremely high energy consumption, and there is nothing to do about it. This is because it is a state that is part of a very developed country (the U.S.), standards of living are therefore high, and the climate and the shape of the cities make the use of air conditioning and cars, mandatory.

Explanation:

For this reason, instead of trying to reduce energy consumption, Arizona should promote a fast energy transition instead. The state should be dotted with solar energy and wind plants everywhere, since the majority of the territory is uninhabited desert. The state could even build nuclear power plants because nuclear is a realiable and cheap source of clean energy.

In conclusion, instead of trying to lower energy consumption, Arizona should make energy consumption come from clean and sustainable sources.

Based on this information, what can be concluded about the Venezuelan people's access to news?

Answers

Answer:

Venezuela is a South American nation located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, which since the end of the 20th century has been governed by a dictatorial process (hidden under a supposed democracy) called "Bolivarian Revolution", established by the late Hugo Chavez and today led by his successor, Nicolas Maduro.

As a consequence of this situation, the political, civil and economic freedoms of the citizens of Venezuela have been cut off, which has generated not only a huge poverty rate but also a general economic crisis and a wave of Venezuelan migrants fleeing to other countries.

However, most of the media do not reproduce the information of this situation, since they are media controlled directly by the government, and respond to its interests. As a consequence, Venezuelans also suffer from serious misinformation about the consequences of the acts carried out by the government, in addition to a lack of freedom regarding access to knowledge and information emanating from the press.

Don't look to the Supreme Court for purple prose

WASHINGTON (AP) (99071391728)

The Supreme Court justices are nine smart men and women. But when it comes to writing, there's not a Shakespeare, Hemingway or even John Grisham among them.

``Trying to pick between the justices in majority opinion writing is rather like asking me whether I prefer Miracle Whip or mayonnaise,'' says Indiana University law professor Charles Geyh. ``You will rarely see what I regard as good writing in Supreme Court opinions.''

[…]

Most of the justices' opinions were no threat to the late Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes and other great opinion writers of the past.

Consider this gem, also by Scalia, in a decision in January involving the Federal Communications Commission's regulation of local telephone business:

``Respondents argue that avoiding this pari passu expansion of commission jurisdiction with expansion of the substantive scope of the act was the reason the `nothing shall be construed' provision was framed in the alternative: `nothing in this act shall be construed to apply or to give the commission jurisdiction' (emphasis added) with respect to the forbidden subjects.''

Got that?

What does the author want the reader to understand from the line in bold?

Supreme Court Justices are expected to be talented writers.

Supreme Court Justices are often quite talented writers.

Supreme Court Justices work hard to make their writing good.

Supreme Court Justices are not usually talented writers.

A. clause C. compound sentence
B. complex sentence D. simple sentence

Answers

Answer:

B. Complex sentence

Explanation:

An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence. Every sentence must contain a subject and predicate and express a complete thought.

Dependent clauses are clauses that can't stand alone as they don't contain all elements of a sentence. Their purpose is to provide additional information about what is stated in the independent clause.

A simple sentence is a sentence that consists of one independent clause.

A compound sentence is a sentence that consists of at least two independent clauses.

A complex sentence is a sentence that consists of one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

The given sentence consists of one independent (... control your sugar intake to  stay healthy) and one dependent clause (Because sugary snacks and drinks are unhealthy...), which makes it a complex sentence.

A resource that animal agriculture is deeply dependent on is water. One third of the planets fresh water is put into use because of the meat and dairy industry. In the United States approximately five percent of water-use is considered domestic and fifty five percent of these liquids are put into animal agriculture. Part of the fifty five percent of the water is also the water that’s given to the animals every day. The amount varies depending on the size of the animals and the environmental settings that take place. An example of this can be a cow that’ll drink an average of thirty gallons of water each day.

Which of the following sentences uses proper punctuation?

They asked me "What I wanted," and I finally said, "I don't know!"

They asked me what I wanted, and I finally said, "I don't know!"

They asked me "What I wanted", and I finally said, "I don't know"!

They asked me what I wanted, and I finally said, "I don't know"!

Answers

Answer:

B). They asked me what I wanted, and I finally said, "I don't know!"

Explanation:

The second option is correctly punctuated as it employs the comma(,), the exclamation mark(!), and the inverted commas("...") aptly. As per the rule, the reported words like 'they asked me what I wanted...said' are not written inside the inverted commas but the exact words "I don't know!" are. The other punctuation marks like a full stop, exclamation marks, etc. are put inside the inverted commas. Thus, option B is the correct answer.
