Read the following article about a man who fell to Earth from a height of 40 kilometers, and then complete the notes on the opposite page.

THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH

On October 14, 2012, Felix Baumgartner made history as the man who fell to Earth from a height of almost 40 kilometers. During the fall, he became the first person to break the sound barrier on his own without the help of any machine. He made the highest and fastest jump in history, after going up in a capsule, similar to a very small spacecraft. The capsule was lifted by a helium balloon to an altitude of about 40 000 meters. Millions of people around the world watched the journey from pictures taken by a camera that was fixed to the capsule itself. When the capsule reached the required height, viewers could see what Felix saw as he looked down: the round, blue Earth, surrounded by the blackness of space. They then watched as Felix stepped into the empty darkness and fell for more than four minutes. During his fall, he reached a maximum speed of more than 1300 kilometers per hour.

The jump was not without challenging moments. For example, the engineers in charge of the mission considered stopping the jump when the glass shield of his helmet began to be covered with mist during the ascent. Later, a new crisis developed during the jump, when Felix began spinning out of control in the thin air of the stratosphere. Fortunately, as the atmosphere thickened, he managed to stop the spin and fall smoothly. He opened his parachute about one and a half kilometers above the ground and landed safely in the desert.

During the jump, Felix broke the altitude and speed records, which had been set half a century before by Joe Kittinger, a retired Air Force colonel, who is now more than eighty years old. It was Joe’s calm voice that guided Felix through some tense moments. Joe praised Felix for his great courage and determination. “Through Felix, we have fulfilled the aims of the mission. We wanted to test this spacesuit for its strength and protective qualities, and it has passed the test.”

The whole mission involved about 300 people, including engineers and scientists who had been working for five years on the project. Apart from breaking the altitude and speed records, the aim was to see how the equipment was affected by the loss of pressure at extreme heights. The information provided by the jump will help pilots and even space tourists survive in the future if they have to jump out of their spaceships in an emergency.

One particular problem that Felix Baumgartner discovered during tests was that he suffered from panic attacks when he was forced to spend hours inside the pressurized space suit and helmet. He was advised by experts to keep busy all the time in order to take his mind off the jump.

In addition, preparations for the jump did not always go smoothly. Several attempts to inflate the helium balloon, which would lift Felix in his capsule to the required height for the jump, had to be abandoned because of bad weather.

Finally, however, everything was prepared and the mission was completed. Viewers from all around the world watched the live video being broadcast both from the capsule and from mission control in Florida. There were a record eight million people watching the jump at the same time.

You are going to give a talk about Felix Baumgartner and his jump to your school science club. Prepare some notes to use as the basis for your talk.

Logan is Janie's first husband. He is unloving and too old for Janie. He treats Janie as if she were a possession like his mule. This guy actually cares about Janie in his own abusive way. Logan represents the old ways for black women, from her grandmother's time when a black woman was satisfied to play the lowest role in society.

Joe Starks

Joe is suave and ambitious. He represents a sense of freedom from Logan and her grandmother's life. Unfortunately she is treated more like a mule than Logan treated her. He represented empty dreams.

Tea Cake

Tea Cake seems to be more sensitive but he lacks direction, security and often common sense. He is sort of a character foil to Joe Starks.

Really, none of them were ideal. Each brought their own storm to Janie's life. At least Tea Cake didn't regularly abuse her but I wouldn't consider any of them "good".

The evidences are as follows:

Hunter Killicks

Janie's first spouse was Logan. He is too elderly and unloving for Janie. He treats Janie like a possession similar to his mule. In his own terrible way, this guy does care about Janie. Logan is a representation of black women's traditional roles from her grandmother's day, when they were content to fill the lowest positions in society.

Who was Joe starks?

Joe is slick and aspiring. He stands for liberation from the lives of Logan and her grandma. Unfortunately, she is treated worse than Logan did, more like a mule. He represented unfulfilled hopes.

Tea Cake

Tea Cake appears to be more sensitive, but he frequently lacks common sense, security, and direction. He kind of serves as Joe Starks' comic counterpoint.

In truth, none of them were perfect. Each caused a different tempest in Janie's life. Even while Tea Cake didn't frequently mistreat her, I wouldn't classify any of them as "good".

Answers

This question is missing the answer options. I have found the complete question online. It is the following:

Read the excerpt from "Aunty Misery.”

La Tia Miseria was blamed by these people for their troubles, of course. Not wishing to be unfair, the old woman made a deal with her prisoner, Death: if he promised not ever to come for her again, she would give him his freedom. He agreed. And that is why there are two things you can always count on running into in this world: Misery and Death: La miseria y la muerte.

Which element of an allegory is found in this excerpt?

A. The message of the story explains something about life.

B. The message of the story is written to frighten readers.

C. The message of the story is exaggerated for children.

D. The message of the story shows that death is miserable.

Answer:

The element of an allegory found in this excerpt is:

A. The message of the story explains something about life.

Explanation:

In an allegory, characters and events are symbols, that is, they represent and relate to something bigger than themselves and the story. Their meanings include life lessons or truths. In the case we are analyzing here, death and misery were transformed into characters and a plot was created to explain why we always find them in life. Death could not kill Misery because of a deal they made, which is why both things can happen to us. Therefore, the message of the story explains something about real life.

Uber and Lyft Drivers Go on Strike This activity is important because fairness gives employees observable evidence of trustworthiness of a manager, company or other source. Managers should know the types of justice and how they can exhibit those to gain trust. Trust is a strong predictor of organizational commitment and a moderate predictor of job performance. The goal of this exercise is to demonstrate your understanding of justice, by reading a case and answering questions that follow. Read the following case about Uber and Lyft and answer the questions that follow. Uber and Lyft drivers went on strike in several U.S. major cities the week of May 6, 2019, holding rallies and, in some cases, drivers not working for 12 to 24 hours. The drivers were protesting a pay decrease per mile and seeking better benefits. Lyft and Uber drivers are independent contractors, so they do not qualify for the same benefits and protections that govern typical employees. Drivers aren't guaranteed minimum wage or overtime, for example. Currently, Uber offers some benefits for high volume drivers, such as discounts on car repair and maintenance. Lyft and Uber have pushed back, with Lyft saying that most drivers work 10 hours or fewer a week and wouldn't qualify for benefits anyway. The timing of the strikes was no accident because Uber faced its IPO (initial public offering) the same week. Since then, Uber reported its largest quarterly loss in August 2019 of $5.2 billion. Furthermore, Lyft's shares fell 20% since its March 2019 IPO. If drivers were considered employees, they would get the same benefits and labor protection of other employees. Legally, they would be entitled to unemployment insurance, health care subsidies, overtime pay and a guaranteed minimum wage, among other rights. The lawsuit currently progressing through the court system in California is projected to be passed into law by the state senate. Uber and Lyft are not the only companies using "gig" workers. For example, another booming business model is food delivery, like Grubhub and DoorDash. Part of these companies' pushback is saying they will not be able to employ as many people due to the costs of benefits. In California, Uber is estimated to have 140,000 drivers and Lyft to have 80,000 drivers. Barclays, a renowned worldwide financial services company, estimated that benefits, payroll taxes and workers compensation would cost Uber $508 million per year and Lyft $290 million per year, assuming the same number of drivers were employed. In June 2019, Uber's and Lyft's top executives joined together to write an op ed in the San Francisco Chronicle to explain their arguments and promise to address the quality of work and job security. In their op ed, the executives sought to provide information to the public and drivers about their positions regarding providing benefits to drivers, showing the desire to increase justice.
