What is an excerpt?

An excerpt, which might be a little passage from a biography, novel, poet, or perhaps an article, is a description of what the author wants to convey to the audience through telling or demonstrating something to them.

In the following excerpt from "On the Mountain," it is told how after he abandoned her, she was hurt. And as the sun was setting, she did not know what she was going to do. So for the upcoming time, she thought to check all her supplies.

This all leads to the upcoming action that is going to happen in the story. It tells you how the events are going to turn out for the lead. Also, what all the difficulties she is going to face, and how she is going to reach the bottom, will be coming next.

Therefore, option B is the correct option.

3. The focus of the poem shifts at line 30. How does this
shift contribute to the meaning of the poem?
O A As the speaker turns from mourning murder victims
to accusing their executioner, the poem focuses on
the injustice of the dictator's rule.
B The focus of the poem shrinks from that of a mass
grave to the life of one man, and this emphasizes
survivors' feelings of guilt.
OC The scope of the poem expands from a meditation
on death to a criticism of tyranny, and this develops
the poem's call to action.
OD As the speaker walks away from the mass grave, the
poem emphasizes how survivors can secure closure.

Answers

Answer:

A. As the speaker turns from mourning murder victims  to accusing their executioner, the poem focuses on  the injustice of the dictator's rule.

Explanation:

A. is the right answer. Around line 30 of the poem the shift occurs, the poet talks about the dictator as the murderer and points finger at him as the unjust ruler and tyrant. The author is explaining how it is the dictator’s fault that millions are dead and how he also has “the heart and the skull”, and so does the audience that claps and supports him, but which can become the victim as well.

B. is not the right answer. The poem does not explore the experiences of survivors' feelings of guilt.

C. is not the right answer. The poem does not call people to action against the dictator.

D. is not the right answer. There is no part about securing closure for certain, and the poem ends ambiguously.

It was my second day on the job. I was sitting in my seemingly gilded cubicle, overlooking Manhattan, and pinching my right arm to make sure it was real. I landed an internship at Los Angeles. Every aspiring writer I’ve ever known secretly dreamt of an Leonardo Di Caprio lifestyle. Travel the world and write about its most colorful pockets.

When my phone rang, and it was Mom telling me Dad had a heart attack. He didn’t make it. I felt as though the perfectly carpeted floors had dropped out from under me. Now that I’ve come out the other side, I realize Dad left me with a hefty stack of teachings. Here are three ideals I know he would’ve liked for me to embrace.

First, you have to stand on your own two feet. As much as our parents love and support us, they can’t go to our school and confess to the principal that we stole a candy bar from Sara. We have to do that. Neither can they walk into the Condé Nast office and nail a job interview for us. At some point, we have to put on our “big girl pants” and be brave, even if we’re not.

Also, there’s a difference between love and co-dependence. Being grateful to have someone to turn to for love and support is not the same as needing someone to turn to for love and support. With the loss of my father, I’ve also lost my sounding board. All I can glean from that is it’s time to look within myself and make proper assessments. If I can’t make sound decisions with the tools already in my kit, then I risk falling for anything.

Finally, memories are, perhaps, the only item that cannot be taken away from us. Will I miss my father? Every single day. What can I do in those times? I can open up our suitcase of memories, pick out my favorite one, and dream about it, talk about it, or write about it. Maybe I can’t pick up the phone and call him anymore, but that doesn’t mean he’s gone.

Next week, I’m off to Istanbul to explore their art scene. As soon as I read the email from my editor, I picked up my phone to call Dad. Then, I realized he’ll never answer my calls again. I fought back the tears, got up to make a cup of peppermint tea, and added a new note to my iPhone titled, “Istanbul Packing List.”

In the end, life goes on. I’m not sure why he had to leave during the single most poignant chapter in my life. So, I won’t dwell on that. Instead, I’ll hold tightly to these three ideals and write about Cali district. Dad will be with me every step of the way.

Answer:

Okay I will try my best, you might have to make slight changes.

Explanation:

A time that I will always remember is when I first moved to a new school. It was scary at first, I had no friends, I didn't know where my classes were. Not to mention I had the worst first day. I was walking down the hallway and I tripped over a book, all my papers went flying everywhere, and worst nobody even helped me. I got lost so many times and I could not find my classrooms. However, in time I made new friends, and I ended up having my best experiences at my new school. I am grateful for this change in my life. Every now and then I look back and see how foolish I was to think that I hated that school, because now I love it and I will always remember it.

In Passage 2, there are two main characters speaking: the “brave Adm’r’l” and the “good mate.” Select the line from the poem that best illustrates the central concern of the “good mate.”

Answers

Hello. This question is about "Columbus" and you forgot the answer options. The response options are:

“For lo! the very stars are gone” (line 6)

“My men grow ghastly, wan and weak” (line 10)

“The stout mate thought of home; a spray” (line 11)

“If we sight naught but seas at dawn?” (line 14)

Answer:

“For lo! the very stars are gone” (line 6)

Explanation:

Good mate is concerned about how he is going to sail, since there are no stars in the sky to guide the way and provide some illumination. He feels worried and doesn't know how to tell the crew what their fate would be like from there on, but brave Adm’r’l encourages him to continue sailing and tell the crew. This can be interpreted as the resilience that we must have when our life seems to be lost and without a way to go. In this case, the poem states that we must not give up, but be strong and "keep sailing."

"The World on the Turtle's Back" is a creation myth. Based on the title and the genre, what can the reader expect to occur in the myth before reading? How can the reader confirm the prediction? Use details from the myth in your response

Answers

Answer:

For the first question: Based on the title and the genre, what can the reader expect to occur in the myth before reading? Answer to question: Readers will most likely expect to have a World or city on top of a turtle shell.

Explanation:

In the question, it says what might a reader expect. The title is a figure of speech, or a myth. Its a myth, but if it was a real thing, it would mean a pile of bugs or objects ontop of an ordinary turtles shell.

Based on the title and genre, we can assume that the story is about how people believe the world is created and how life began on earth. And with the title "The World on the Turtle's Back", it is most likely that the creation of the world began with a turtle playing an important role in the creation.

This can be confirmed by the lines-

"In the beginning, there was no world, no land, no creatures, . . . no men."

"The great sea turtle came . . . [and] floated about on the huge ocean with the woman safely on his back."

The creation myth "The World on the Turtle's Back" is an Iroquois myth that tells the story of how the world was created. It also delves into the issue of the complex nature of people and how such conflicts led to the present-day dilemmas of man.

On first reading the title and genre of the story, before reading the whole story, one can assume that the myth would be about how the world was created. The genre of it being a myth also contributes to the theme of it being an ancient story. And judging by the title, we can also assume that the story would involve a turtle one way or the other. These predictions are confirmed by certain lines in the myth where the speaker narrates the story. The statement "In the beginning, there was no world, no land, no creatures, . . . no men" shows how life was before and mostly points to the story's creation theme. Also, the revelation "The great sea turtle came . . . [and] floated about on the huge ocean with the woman safely on his back" reveals how the turtle was an important part of the safety and beginning of man's life on earth.

The Iroquois's belief of how the world began is seen in this creation myth. This provides us a sense of how they believe the world was created, and how the different natures of men led to present-day issues. This creation myth provides us with an insight into the Iroquois people's beliefs about creation.
