It's five o'clock in the morning in Syria, and it's chilly and windy. Detective Hercule Poirot boards the Taurus Express bound for Stamboul (Istanbul) for a few days of rest.
Lieutenant Dubosc expresses his gratitude to Poirot as he boards the train, saying, "You have rescued us mon cher...you have preserved the honor of the French Army." "But, truly, do I not remember that you once saved my life?" Poirot responds.
Poirot joins the train after exchanging further pleasantries with the General. On the train, he is accompanied by Mary Debenham and Colonel Arbuthnot, whom Hercule first meets that morning at breakfast.
Poirot observes every feature of Arbuthnot and Debenham while sipping coffee. Arbuthnot approaches Debenham, who is already eating breakfast, and inquires about if he might join her.
