Uncle Tom's Cabin: or, Life Among the Lowly by Harriet Beecher Stowe smashed sales records and fueled the divides that ultimately led to the Civil War nine years before it started. The narrative, which appeared in the Washington, D.C., newspaper the National Era from June 1851 to April 1852 in forty-one weekly installments, was written in protest of the abhorrent Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.
To create memorable characters and two compelling antislavery plot lines, Stowe expertly combined images from almost every area of culture, including religion, sensational pulp fiction, and popular entertainment. The Northern plot line involved the escape of the fugitive slaves Eliza and George Harris with their son, Harry; the Southern one followed the heartbreaking separation of Uncle Tom from his family in Kentucky when he was sold into the Deep South.
