In the middle of the 1920s, The Sun Also Rises follows a group of young American and British ex-pats as they travel through Europe. Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley, two of the key characters in the book, are representative of the Lost Generation. The narrator of the book, Jake, is a journalist and a survivor of World War I. Jake sustained a wound during the conflict that left him powerless. (The title makes a subtle allusion to Jake's damage and what no longer rises as a result.)
