Dressing the Part – Frances Benjamin Johnston, above, might have raised a few eyebrows when she donned a man’s suit and a fake moustache for this self-portrait in the late 1800s. But the groundbreaking photographer was used to operating in a man’s world.

How do this photo and caption enhance the information provided in the book?

A. They connect the book’s ideas about the American bicycle industry.

B. They offer an example of wealthy society’s enthusiasm for bicycles.

C. They provide insight about the English influence on American bicycles.

D. They emphasize the idea that bicycles helped blur gender roles.

Answer:

The correct answer is D) They emphasize the idea that bicycles helped blur gender roles.

Explanation:

It is safe to say that the bicycle disrupted the social system as its popularity and adoption gave more freedom of expression and transportation to the female gender.

Suffice it to say that in the 18th century and prior to the invention of the bicycle, women were not as vocal, outspoken, and liberal as they are today.

Sue Macy the author of "Wheels of Change" makes a connection between this newfound technology and how it allowed girls and women to do things they couldn't do before.

For instance, if women could use the bicycle as a means of transport, then they could definitely use it as a form of sports.

History has it that with these developments, came a backlash from the male chauvinists. Some of their argument rested on how it was unladylike to move around on such a vehicle.

Of course, these didn't enervate the course of history.

Cheers

Answer: D They emphasize the idea that bicycles helped blur gender roles.

What is the author's viewpoint in "An Army Corps Like No Other"? O The Camel Corp may have failed, in part, because of the way Americans treated the camels. O The Camel Corp is an important part of the history of the American military O The cost to bring camels to the US was not worth the amount of work it took to train them. O If not for the Civil War, camels would still be used by the military today. How is the viewpoint in Part A conveyed in the text? O He lists the many advantages to using camels in the desert and blames the war for the failure of the project. O He states that life for camels was more harsh in the US than in their homeland, so they lashed out at their handlers. O He describes how difficult it was to bring camels to the US and their inability to do the same work as horses. O He lists the many accomplishments of the Camel Corp compared to regular army missions.

Answers

Answer:

O The Camel Corp is an important part of the history of the American military.

O He lists the many advantages to using camels in the desert and blames the war for the failure of the project.

Explanation:

In the article/ informational text "An Army Corps Like No Other", the author Tom Sentra details how camels came to be a part of the American War. He provides background information on how the desert animals were a part and also an important means of transportation for the army.

The author's viewpoint in the text is that the Camel Corp plays an important part in the history of the American military which is under-acknowledged. To him, he believes that camels were a huge help, but the only problem was the misguided and unfamiliar ways of treating the animals right by their handlers. He ended his piece with the statement "Had the war not started, perhaps the camel project would have left a more memorable impression."

And by listing the numerous advantages of the use of the desert animal, he also brings the point that war is the ultimate reason for the failure of the project.

Thus, the correct answers are the second option for part A and the last option for Part B.

Answer:

O The Camel Corp is an important part of the history of the American military.

O He lists the many advantages to using camels in the desert and blames the war for the failure of the project.

Answer:

To me,the Percy Jackson series was very readable and fun. I loved reading from Percy's perspective, how humorous he was, etc. It is true that Rick Riordan's writing style is very simple but after all,he is an author for younger readers and does seem to have succeeded in getting reluctant readers to read.

His characters are very memorable and you tend to just like them immediately. Even the ones you don't like, you'll eventually find tolerable. It's also a plus that I happen to love Greek mythology. Rick Riordan at least manages to present all the elements of Greek mythology quite accurately. Even though it is a kids' book,it still manages to be deep and dark at the right times so it can appeal to older readers as well.

I started reading the books at 13 and loved them. I'm not too fond of the Heroes of Olympus, however. It has lost the Percy Jackson charm in my opinion.
