The Sit-ins: Four black college freshman in Greensboro, North Carolina, requested service politely at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter in February 1960. Even though they were ignored, they stayed put until the counter closed. More pupils were present when they came the following day; they were patiently waiting to be served at the counter. They were engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience, just like the protestors in Montgomery. "Sit-ins" were the name given to the lunch counter protests in Greensboro. Other students in Southern cities began conducting sit-ins as word of them spread. By April 1960, about 50,000 students had participated in sit-ins.
