THE WORLD WITH A THOUSAND MOONS
CHAPTER 1: Thrill Cruise
By Edmond Hamilton

Lance Kenniston felt the cold realization of failure as he came out of the building into the sharp chill of the Martian night. He stood for a moment, his lean, drawn face haggard in the light of the two hurtling moons.

He looked hopelessly across the dark spaceport. It was a large one, for this ancient town of Syrtis was the main port of Mars. The forked light of the flying moons showed many ships docked on the tarmac—a big liner, several freighters, a small, shining cruiser and other small craft. And for lack of one of those ships, his hopes were ruined!

A squat, brawny figure in shapeless space-jacket came to Kenniston's side. It was Holk Or, the Jovian who had been waiting for him.

"What luck?" asked the Jovian in a rumbling whisper.

"It's hopeless," Kenniston answered heavily. "There isn't a small cruiser to be had at any price. The meteor-miners buy up all small ships here."

"The devil!" muttered Holk Or, dismayed. "What are we going to do? Go on to Earth and get a cruiser there?"

"We can't do that," Kenniston answered. "You know we've got to get back to that asteroid within two weeks. We've got to get a ship here."

Desperation made Kenniston's voice taut. His lean, hard face was bleak with knowledge of disastrous failure.

The big Jovian scratched his head. In the shifting moonlight his battered green face expressed ignorant perplexity as he stared across the busy spaceport.

"That shiny little cruiser there would be just the thing," Holk Or muttered, looking at the gleaming, torpedo-shaped craft nearby. "It would hold all the stuff we've got to take; and with robot controls we two could run it."

"We haven't a chance to get that craft," Kenniston told him. "I found out that it's under charter to a bunch of rich Earth youngsters who came out here in it for a pleasure cruise. A girl named Loring, heiress to Loring Radium, is the head of the party."

The Jovian swore. "Just the ship we need, and a lot of spoiled kids are using it for thrill-hunting!"

Kenniston had an idea. "It might be," he said slowly, "that they're tired of the cruise by this time and would sell us the craft. I think I'll go up to the Terra Hotel and see this Loring girl."

"Sure, let's try it anyway," Holk Or agreed.

With the Jovian clumping along beside him, Kenniston made his way from the spaceport across the ancient Martian city.

Long ago in the Imperial Court, the emperor fell in love with a certain lady. She was not of a high rank, nor was she of a low rank. The emperor lavished her with much attention, causing other ladies of the court to say hurtful things about her and treat her poorly. These ladies resented her presence in the court and made her feel very unwelcome. Their unkindness caused her to become ill, which in turn kept her at home and away from the court and the emperor. But the emperor’s affection for her only grew and gave him courage to pursue his love despite what others thought.

Tituba befriends a group of young, Puritan girls. Who has power in this text? Tituba? The girls? Someone else? Determine who has power in the text, and argue your position using evidence from the text.

Answers

Hello. You did not enter the text to which this question refers, which may leave my answer unspecified.

Answer:

Puritan girls have the power

Explanation:

Tituba was a woman and black slave, which puts her in a very vulnerable situation in a patriarchal and prejudiced society like the Puritans. The girls with whom she befriended, although they are devalued by society because they are women, are white and free girls who exercise a strong power over Tituba, who must be submissive and devalued in relation to girls. This shows that in this group of friends, the girls were the characters with power, being free to treat Tituba as they wished.

"The Story of an Hour" has been criticized for having a rigged ending with a cheap trick. Do you agree or disagree and why? How does this ending illuminate Mrs. Mallard's feelings about her husband?

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

"The Story of an Hour" is a short story by author Kate Chopin. The main character, Mrs. Mallard, is told that her husband has died in a train accident. Instead of grieving, she realizes she is now a free woman. However, in the end, her husband turns out to be alive. Upon seeing him, Mrs. Mallard dies of the shock due to a heart condition she has.

Let's tackle each question separately.

"The Story of an Hour" has been criticized for having a rigged ending with a cheap trick. Do you agree or disagree and why?

I disagree. I do not see the ending as rigged at all. Chopin used a very common technique in this story - foreshadowing. Mrs. Mallard's heart condition - and the fatality of such condition - is revealed and quite emphasized at the very beginning of the plot. A careful, mindful reader will have no problems recognizing this as an important detail for the rest of the story.

How does this ending illuminate Mrs. Mallard's feelings about her husband?

Her dying upon seeing him means her disappointment was too great to bear. It is not that she did not love him, but she had finally realized she loved herself and her freedom more. Having him back meant she was going to lose her newly-discovered identity, her brand new passion for living.

Read the passage from The Odyssey - Teiresias. But anguish lies ahead; the god who thunders on the land prepares it, not to be shaken from your track, implacable, in rancor for the son whose eye you blinded. One narrow strait may take you through his blows: denial of yourself, restraint of shipmates. When you make landfall on Thrinakia first and quit the violet sea, dark on the land you'll find the grazing herds of Helios by whom all things are seen, all speech is known. Avoid those kine, hold fast to your intent, and hard seafaring brings you all to Ithaka. But if you raid the beeves, I see destruction for ship and crew. Which theme is reflected in the passage? It is important to take responsibility for your actions. Long-term goals are more important than short-term gains. The true measure of wisdom is overcoming your pride. The Golden Hope
by Robert H. Fuller (adapted excerpt)

Chares, too, belonged to a family of wealth and influence, for his father, Jason, had been one of the foremost men in Thebes. In height he stood more than six feet, and the knotted muscles of his arms indicated enormous strength. He was buoyant, light-hearted, irresponsible, and pleasure-loving. His affection for the Athenian, whom he had known from boyhood, was the strongest impulse in him.

They (Chares and Clearchus) had first met Leonidas at the Olympic Games, where he won the laurel crown in the chariot race, and they had there admitted him to their friendship. Different as they were from each other, there seemed little in common between either of them and the swarthy Lacedæmonian who lay eating silently while they chattered gossip of mutual acquaintances. Leonidas was rather below the middle stature, all bone and sinew, practised in arms, and inured to hardships from his childhood by the unbending discipline of Sparta. His dark hair grew low down on his forehead and his black eyes were set deep under overhanging brows. He neither shared nor wished to understand the delight which Clearchus felt in a perfect statue or a masterpiece of painting. He scorned the philosophers and poets. Upon the questionable pleasures to which Chares gave his days and nights, he looked with good-natured contempt. The narrow prejudices of his country were ingrained too deeply in his character to be disturbed by any change of surroundings.

In each of the three young men who met in the house of Clearchus were typified many of the characteristics of the states to which they belonged. Athens, Thebes, and Sparta in turn had held the supremacy in the little peninsula to which the civilized world was confined but contrasted as they were, there was still a bond between them that had been welded by centuries of association.

Based on the passage, what is the best inference that can be made about Clearchus's character? A. He appreciates and values artistic talent. B. He enjoys chariot races. C. He enjoys being from a wealthy family. D. He appreciates and values physical strength.

Answers
