T
Jilly moved down the tables, tucking a stray hair behind her ear with a gloved and already dirty hand. She'd repotted the last of the rosemary plants and mixed a new batch of potting soil already. Mrs. T. now had enough potting soil to last her through September. Jilly looked at a couple of maiden-hair ferns that were beginning to yellow in their small pots. She loved their lacey fronds and had grown concerned over the last few days that they needed repotting or a boost of fertilizer. She had also worried that she would continue to find chores that needed doing, plants that needed help, right up until the minute she left today. She hated unfinished things. She hated details not being tended to.

The sun had been above the trees and blasting the greenhouse for a good hour now. Jilly listened for the familiar whirr of the automatic vents opening. When the greenhouse reached a certain temperature, the vents would open automatically. The vents would have a cooling effect for an hour or so, and then no amount of breeze would put a dent in the heat. Mrs. T. often claimed Jilly must be part reptile as she was able to work longer in the greenhouse than anyone else. The heat just didn't bother her. In fact, Jilly often looked forward to the warmth of the greenhouse and feeling the heat seep into her bones. It felt good to her, but she understood others who found it hard to breathe in 100 degree temperatures.

Jilly heard the greenhouse door bang, and looked up from her ferns to see Mrs. T. walking down the aisle with a tray of young plants. Mums, Jilly supposed, the flowers everyone wants for fall. She had helped Mrs. T. take cuttings and plant the small stems in new pots. They were doing nicely from the look of things.

"We will keep these in here for now," said Mrs. T. "They are getting too much rain outside."

It had been a rainy couple of days. Jilly knew, as well as anyone, that overwatering could kill potted plants quickly.

"Do you remember when I overwatered those mint plants?" Jilly asked Mrs. T.

"I used to think no one could kill a mint plant," Mrs. T. said, laughing.

"Well I am full of surprises, apparently," Jilly replied. Jilly remembered the sad green plants that just kept looking more and more wilted no matter how much water she gave them. It was a beginner's mistake, and Jilly had been so embarrassed for making it.

"That you are," replied Mrs. T. "But I know you learned a lesson you won't ever forget."

"Of course. Herbs like their roots damp, not flooded," Jilly answered.

"Well that is not the lesson I was thinking of," Mrs. T. said.

Jilly wondered for a minute what the lesson could be. She straightened the rows of geraniums in front of her, picking up one or two to check for aphids under the leaves. It had been a summer full of lessons, some especially hard for a girl who thought she knew a lot about plants. She breathed deeply the warm, humid air. She hated the cooped up feeling of air conditioned air, the feeling of being cut off from the sun. She knew school and the library would offer only these uncomfortable feelings and little time to spend in the sun or with plants. She had come to understand this over the summer-her need to be around growing things was huge.

"I'm not sure, Mrs. T." she said, "I've learned so much this summer. I couldn't possibly say what you are thinking."

"You did learn many lessons, Jilly. You knew so much when you started. You've gone farther than any other assistants I've had. I will miss you."

"And I will miss you," Jilly replied. "Thank you for the opportunity and the job." Jilly watched Mrs. T. put the tray of mums down on the center row of tables. Wearing her familiar brown apron, Mrs. T. looked just as she had on Jilly's first day.

"My pleasure, of course, dear," Mrs. T. replied. "My hope for you, as for all my assistants over the years, is that you will learn as much about yourself as you do about growing plants."

Recalling her thoughts all morning, about what she enjoyed about her summer job, Jilly realized she knew much more than just how to not drown the mint.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Option 1: She hated the cooped up feeling of air conditioned air, the feeling of being cut off from the sun. She knew school and the library would offer only these uncomfortable feelings and little time to spend in the sun or around plants.

Explanation:

In this passage, Jilly is reflecting on her summer job working in a greenhouse under the guidance of Mrs. T. Jilly has learned a lot about plants and gardening over the course of the summer, including the importance of not overwatering mint plants and how to recognize the signs of pests like aphids. She also mentions that she has been taught many lessons, and Mrs. T. reminds her that she has learned as much about herself as she has about growing plants. Jilly expresses appreciation for the opportunity and job and is sad for leaving the job. The text gives the impression that Jilly is someone who cares about her work, enjoys it and is good at it. She also finds pleasure in being in the greenhouse, as it makes her feel connected to nature.

This line describes a conflict in the story, where Jilly is experiencing the internal conflict of her love for being in nature and working with plants, versus her future responsibilities and obligations which would restrict her time to be around nature and plants.

Answer 2
1. She hated the cooped up feeling of air conditioned air, the feeling of being cut off from the sun. She knew school and the library would offer only these uncomfortable feelings and little time to spend in the sun or around plants.

This passage describes a conflict in Jilly's feelings, as she is struggling with the idea of leaving the greenhouse and returning to school and other indoor environments. She expresses her dislike for being in air-conditioned spaces and feeling cut off from the sun, as well as her fear that she will not have enough time to spend in nature and with plants. This suggests that Jilly has a deep connection to the natural world and the plants she has been working with, and that she will be unhappy and unfulfilled in a more urban and indoor lifestyle. This line expresses the inner conflict that Jilly will face when she leaves her summer job and goes back to the different lifestyle of school.

However, based on the given claims, we can analyze their validity without direct evidence from the text.

Claim a: History shows that people have always complained about changes in language, but time shows that these changes are not harmful but rather innovations.

Without specific evidence from the text, it is difficult to evaluate the author's reasons for this claim. However, if the author provides historical examples of language changes that were initially criticized but eventually accepted and embraced, it would support the claim. Conversely, if the author fails to provide such examples or counterarguments, it weakens the claim's support.

Fedallah had a strange vision. Can you guess what his vision means? Will ot come true? What do you believe will happen?

Answers

Fedallah's strange vision in the novel "Moby-Duck" by Herman Melville is open to interpretation. While it is difficult to provide a definitive meaning, the vision may be symbolic and foreshadowing of events to come. It is uncertain whether the vision will come true, as the outcome depends on various factors within the story.

Fedallah's vision in "Moby-Duck" is described as seeing a hearse-like heathen idol with a golden coffin riding on the back of a white horse. The vision is ominous and suggests death and destruction. It can be interpreted as a foreshadowing of the tragic events that unfold in the story, such as the death of Captain Ahab and the destruction of the Pequod.

However, the interpretation of the vision's meaning and whether it will come true is subjective and open to different perspectives. Some may believe that the vision is a prophetic sign, foretelling the fate of the characters and the ship. Others may view it as a reflection of Fedallah's own beliefs and fears.

Ultimately, the outcome of the vision depends on the choices and actions of the characters within the story. While there are elements of fate and destiny in "Moby-Duck," the narrative also emphasizes the free will and agency of the characters. Therefore, whether the vision comes true or not is uncertain and can only be determined by the events that unfold in the novel.

Part B: The sentence highlights the ideal growing conditions and visual resemblance of the cacao tree to apple trees, emphasizing the natural characteristics and linking it to the manufacturing process of chocolate.

Part A:

The purpose of the author drawing the reader's attention to the appearance of the cacao tree in such minute detail is to divert their attention away from the method of manufacturing chocolate and towards the nature that is involved in the production of chocolate.

Part B:

The following statement from Part A provides the strongest evidence for the correct answer: "These trees, which are typically found in tropical climates, do well in shady areas, and have a similar appearance to apple trees." This sentence contains particular details about the qualities of the cacao tree, noting the growing conditions that are ideal for the cacao tree as well as the visual likeness that it shares with apple trees. By placing a greater emphasis on these particulars, the author draws the attention of the reader away from the process of actually manufacturing chocolate and instead draws attention to the natural characteristics of the cacao tree. This lends credence to the idea that the author aims to draw the reader's attention to the link that exists between the natural world and chocolate, with a particular emphasis on the role that the cacao tree plays in the manufacturing process of this widely consumed good.

Give me one situation each of Positive feedback, negative feedback, and ambiguous feedback in communication

Answers

Positive feedback involves providing praise or recognition for someone's accomplishments or actions, while negative feedback focuses on pointing out areas for improvement or addressing mistakes. Ambiguous feedback refers to unclear or vague messages that can be interpreted differently by the recipient.

Positive Feedback: An example of positive feedback in communication is when a manager praises an employee for their excellent presentation skills during a team meeting. The manager acknowledges the employee's effort, highlights their strengths, and expresses appreciation for their contribution. Positive feedback boosts morale, reinforces positive behavior, and motivates individuals to continue performing at a high level.

Negative Feedback: Negative feedback occurs when a teacher provides constructive criticism to a student on their essay. The teacher points out areas where the student needs improvement, such as grammar errors or lack of supporting evidence. While negative feedback may initially be disheartening, it serves as an opportunity for growth and learning. The teacher offers specific suggestions for improvement, helping the student develop their skills and enhance their future performance.

Ambiguous Feedback: Ambiguous feedback can be seen in a situation where a coworker says, "Your presentation was interesting." This statement is open to interpretation because it lacks specificity. The recipient may wonder whether the presentation was engaging, informative, or confusing. Ambiguous feedback can lead to uncertainty and confusion, making it challenging for individuals to understand their strengths and areas that need improvement. In such cases, it is crucial to seek clarification or ask for more specific feedback to gain a better understanding of the intended message.

Participants did not know that the situation was staged and it was scripted the same for all participants. The researchers recorded the percentage of individuals who decided to go for help. Based on what you've learned about the bystander intervention effect, which condition would have the highest percentage of people who decided to go for help? a. Having 7 other people in the room b. Having 3 other people in the room c. Being alone in the room

Answers

The Bystander Intervention Effect is a phenomenon in which the presence of other people can influence an individual’s decision to take action. In this case, the presence of 7 other people in the room when the black smoke began filling the room can influence a participant’s decision to go for help.

Correct option is A.

According to the bystander effect, the condition with the highest percentage of people who decided to go for help would be having 7 other people in the room. This is because the presence of more people increases the overall perceived responsibility to act. With more people, there is more of a chance that someone will take the initiative.

Additionally, the presence of more people can provide more social support and encouragement for someone to take action. Thus, having 7 other people in the room would likely result in the highest percentage of people who decided to go for help.

Correct option is A.

PLEASE HELP!! 50 POINTS!! Read the following passage from Muir's "Calypso Borealis" and respond to the prompt.

[1] After earning a few dollars working on my brother-in law's farm near Portage [Wisconsin], I set off on the first of my long lonely excursions, botanising in glorious freedom around the Great Lakes and wandering through innumerable tamarac and arbor-vitae swamps, and forests of maple, basswood, ash, elm, balsam, fir, pine, spruce, hemlock, rejoicing in their bound wealth and strength and beauty, climbing the trees, revelling in their flowers and fruit like bees in beds of goldenrods, glorying in the fresh cool beauty and charm of the bog and meadow heathworts, grasses, carices, ferns, mosses, liverworts displayed in boundless profusion.

[2] The rarest and most beautiful of the flowering plants I discovered on this first grand excursion was Calypso borealis (the Hider of the North). I had been fording streams more and more difficult to cross and wading bogs and swamps that seemed more and more extensive and more difficult to force one's way through. Entering one of these great tamarac and arbor-vitae swamps one morning, holding a general though very crooked course by compass, struggling through tangled drooping branches and over and under broad heaps of fallen trees, I began to fear that I would not be able to reach dry ground before dark, and therefore would have to pass the night in the swamp and began, faint and hungry, to plan a nest of branches on one of the largest trees or windfalls like a monkey's nest, or eagle's, or Indian's in the flooded forests of the Orinoco described by Humboldt.

Modern history and events in contemporary times demonstrate that the Iliad's themes and ideas are still relevant. The Iliad, which tells the tale of the Trojan War, is a poem about war. It is a narrative about the campaign of a large coalition to punish an overseas power for violating certain norms and standards. The themes of the Iliad, like the themes of war and retribution, are still relevant in modern history and current times. It may be argued that contemporary history is defined by a series of military conflicts, with nations seeking to enforce their ideals and way of life on other countries.

Even more recent events, such as those that occurred during the early years of the 21st century, may be seen as an example of a coalition of nations enforcing their standards of freedom and democracy on others.
