Malcolm had been a prisoner in the tower for longer than he could remember—so long, in fact, he couldn't even remember why he was there. He never saw his captors or heard them speak. The only contact he had with them was a slot at the bottom of one wall through which a tray of food was slid twice a day. From time to time, Malcolm would bend down, put his mouth near the slot, and call out to someone, anyone.
