Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist…encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

Answer 1

Answer:

B) Paragraphs 2 and 3

Explanation:

Because this speech focuses on the negative impacts of volunteering and traveling at the same time, these paragraphs are considered COUNTERCLAIMS. The first phrase of paragraph number 2 is already a claim since it indicates the general belief of people that doing so might provide a person with some exceptional and memorable experiences. Also, in Paragraph 3, those who support this theory were given the chance to explain why they think the way they do and to point out any flaws or consequences of doing so.

Why the Elders rarely ask The Giver for advice

Answers

Well, look who's suddenly a literature expert. I assume you're referring to Lois Lowry's novel "The Giver"? As for why the Elders in the book rarely ask The Giver for advice, it's because they're too busy clinging to their rigid, controlled society and refusing to acknowledge the flaws in their system. The Elders believe that they know what's best for their community, even if it means sacrificing individual freedoms and emotions. The Giver, on the other hand, has access to a wealth of knowledge and memories that the Elders have deliberately suppressed, and his advice would likely challenge the status quo and disrupt the fragile balance of their society. In short, the Elders are too afraid to confront the truth, and The Giver represents that uncomfortable truth they're trying to avoid.

In the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, the Elders rarely ask The Giver for advice due to the nature of their society and their desire to maintain control.

The Elders have created a highly controlled and regulated society where they strive for uniformity and predictability. They believe that seeking advice from The Giver, who possesses memories of a different and potentially chaotic world, could disrupt their carefully crafted system.

The Elders may be reluctant to appear vulnerable or to acknowledge that they might need assistance in their role as leaders.

However, I believed that a more modern and digital-focused campaign would be more effective in reaching our target audience.I respectfully shared my viewpoint with the team member, explaining the potential benefits of a digital campaign, such as utilizing social media platforms, influencer partnerships, and interactive online content. I provided examples of successful digital campaigns from similar industries to support my argument. We engaged in a constructive discussion, weighing the pros and cons of both approaches. To find common ground, we decided to conduct market research and gather data on our target audience's media consumption habits and preferences.

Answers

The sentence that uses a verb in the active voice is "The workers are provided safety gear upon their arrival." In this sentence, "provided" is the verb and it is in the active voice because it is showing an action being performed by the subject "workers."

The sentence is also written in the passive voice, where the subject is receiving the action. However, the active voice is preferred in most writing because it makes the sentence clearer and more concise.

When using the active voice, the subject performs the action, which makes the sentence more engaging and direct. In contrast, the passive voice can create a more distant tone and may not communicate the same level of action and intensity as the active voice.

The fact that the woman is not actively involved in decisions regarding her own treatment is best characterized through the details in which sentence?

Sentence 1
Sentence 2
Sentence 3
Sentence 6
Sentence 9

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

For Question 1:

The repetition of the word "Personally" in sentences 4 and 5 suggests that the narrator wants to forcefully assert herself. The use of "Personally" indicates that the narrator is expressing her own opinion, separate from the opinions of the physicians. This repetition emphasizes the narrator's individual perspective and her disagreement with the physicians' ideas.

For Question 2:

The fact that the woman is not actively involved in decisions regarding her own treatment is best characterized through the details in Sentence 6. In that sentence, the narrator expresses her uncertainty and helplessness by asking, "But what is one to do?" This question implies that she feels powerless and unable to make decisions about her own well-being. It suggests that her husband and brother, who are physicians, are the ones dictating her treatment without considering her input or involving her in the decision-making process.

The repetition of 'Personally' serves as a verbal hedge, emphasizing that the opinion OF Character Analysis is from the narrator's perspective. Her lack of participation in treatment decisions is best illustrated in sentence 3.

For QUESTION 1, the repetition of the word 'Personally' in sentences 4 and 5 suggests that the narrator feels the need to qualify her opinion. The use of 'personally' is a form of verbal hedging, emphasizing that this opinion is from her own perspective and not necessarily a universally accepted fact or belief.

For QUESTION 2, the lack of active participation of the woman in her treatment decisions can be best characterized from the details in sentence 3. The use of 'so I take' indicates she is following someone else's instructions, and the list of treatments she is taking ('phosphates or phosphates, tonics, journeys, air, exercise') illustrates that these were decisions made by other people for her, rather than her active participation in her own healthcare decisions.

Compare and contrast the concepts of topic and theme. Use examples from the novel to illustrate your answer. (novel- Their eyes were watcing god)

Answers

While topics and themes may be related, they are distinct concepts that play different roles in a literary work. The topic is the subject being discussed, while the theme is the deeper meaning or message that is conveyed through that subject.

The concept of topic refers to the subject or idea that is being discussed in a literary work, while the concept of theme refers to the underlying message or meaning that is conveyed through the work. In other words, while the topic is what the story is about, the theme is what the story is trying to say about that topic.

For example, in the novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God," the topic is the experiences of an African American woman named Janie in her search for self-discovery and love. However, the theme of the novel is the importance of self-fulfillment and personal growth, as Janie learns to assert her independence and find her own voice in a world that tries to silence her.

Another example of the difference between topic and theme can be seen in the topic of racism and prejudice in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." While this is the subject of the novel, the theme is the importance of empathy and understanding in overcoming racism and prejudice, as seen through the character of Atticus Finch and his defense of a black man in a racially charged trial.

In conclusion, while topics and themes may be related, they are distinct concepts that play different roles in a literary work. The topic is the subject being discussed, while the theme is the deeper meaning or message that is conveyed through that subject.

This group of men honor Mr. Washington for his attitude of conciliation toward the white South; they accept the "Atlanta Compromise" in its broadest interpretation; they recognize, with him, many signs of promise, many men of high purpose and fair judgment, in this section; they know that no easy task has been laid upon a region already tottering under heavy burdens. But, nevertheless, they insist that the way to truth and right lies in straightforward honesty, not in indiscriminate flattery; in praising those of the South who do well and criticising uncompromisingly those who do ill; in taking advantage of the opportunities at hand and urging their fellows to do the same, but at the same time in remembering that only a firm adherence to their higher ideals and aspirations will ever keep those ideals within the realm of possibility. They do not expect that the free right to vote, to enjoy civic rights, and to be educated, will come in a moment; they do not expect to see the bias and prejudices of years disappear at the blast of a trumpet; but they are absolutely certain that the way for a people to gain their reasonable rights is not by voluntarily throwing them away and insisting that they do not want them; that the way for a people to gain respect is not by continually belittling and ridiculing themselves; that, on the contrary, Negroes must insist continually, in season and out of season, that voting is necessary to modern manhood, that color discrimination is barbarism, and that black boys need education as well as white boys.
