Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

How does the speaker's rhetorical question in paragraph 2 support the purpose of the speech?

It emphasizes the need for willing and wealthy volunteers to bring help to those less fortunate.
It highlights how unfair life can be for certain groups of people throughout the world.
It reinforces the idea that voluntourism can harm the people and communities it is meant to help.
It reminds the audience that there are some who fight the injustice associated with voluntourism.

Answer 1

Each paragraph of the speech "Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True" and consider the advertisement "The Opportunity of a Lifetime." talks about the importance of voluntourism and then goes ahead to ask the question of whether voluntourism is really helpful to people and to its proponents.

What is a Speech?

This refers to a formal talk that is given to a group of people about a particular topic to convince or influence them.

Hence, we can see that the first two paragraphs talk about the narration of engaging in voluntourism during Spring Break and then subsequent paragraphs ask if the effort is worth it and whether efforts would be better directed elsewhere.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
by Robert Louis Stevenson
Part 1

1. Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable. At friendly meetings, and when the wine was to his taste, something eminently human beaconed from his eye; something indeed which never found its way into his talk, but which spoke not only in these silent symbols of the after-dinner face, but more often and loudly in the acts of his life. He was austere with himself; drank gin when he was alone, to mortify a taste for vintages; and though he enjoyed the theatre, had not crossed the doors of one for twenty years. But he had an approved tolerance for others; sometimes wondering, almost with envy, at the high pressure of spirits involved in their misdeeds; and in any extremity inclined to help rather than to reprove.
2. "I incline to, Cain's heresy*," he used to say. "I let my brother go to the devil in his quaintly 'own way.'" In this character, it was frequently his fortune to be the last reputable acquaintance and the last good influence in the lives of down-going men. And to such as these, so long as they came about his chambers, he never marked a shade of change in his demeanour.
3. No doubt the feat was easy to Mr. Utterson; for he was undemonstrative at the best, and even his friendship seemed to be founded in a similar catholicity of good-nature. It is the mark of a modest man to accept his friendly circle ready-made from the hands of opportunity; and that was the lawyer's way. His friends were those of his own blood or those whom he had known the longest; his affections, like ivy, were the growth of time, they implied no aptness in the object. Hence, no doubt, the bond that united him to Mr. Richard Enfield, his distant kinsman, the well-known man about town. It was a nut to crack for many, what these two could see in each other, or what subject they could find in common. It was reported by those who encountered them in their Sunday walks, that they said nothing, looked singularly dull, and would hail with obvious relief the appearance of a friend. For all that, the two men put the greatest store by these excursions, counted them the chief jewel of each week, and not only set aside occasions of pleasure, but even resisted the calls of business, that they might enjoy them uninterrupted.
*The biblical story of Cain and Abel is a story about two brothers who gave offerings to God. Abel's offering was accepted by God, but Cain's was not. Jealous, Cain killed his brother. When God asked Cain where Abel was, Cain said, Am I my brother's keeper? By saying this, Cain implied that what his brother did was his own business. (Genesis 4:1-16)

When Mr. Utterson says that he "inclines to Cain's heresy," this reveals that he is

Select one:

a questioning character

an inquisitive person

a real snoop

a curious student

Answers

Answer:

a real snoop

( if it isn't this, then the answer is "a questioning character" )

Explanation:

Since negative connotations are basically words that give people a bad feeling when they hear it, we can apply this knowledge to these choices.

A questioning character:  This could mean someone who seems suspicious or someone who just comes off as weird to people.

An inquisitive character: the word "inquisitive" is basically another word for "curious."

A real snoop: "snoop" is someone, or when someone, is prying and going through your stuff. Usually, when someone is said to be a "snoop," it's usually in an invasive sense.

A curious student: This doesn't signify that this person is doing anything wrong or negative.

Dear Headmaster: I must explain to you the causes of my prolonged absence from the institute, since as of today I have not attended it for three weeks. The truth is that, as a result of the current coronavirus pandemic, 21 days ago my father began to manifest symptoms such as cough, fever and body pain, after which he decided to carry out a test to check the possibility of being infected with said disease. Three days later, the test gave a positive result, with which the whole family went into quarantine, including me.

Then, gradually we all started to feel the same symptoms, since as a closed family group we live in the same home and, therefore, we infect each other. So, 2 weeks ago it was I who began to experience symptoms, so I could not return to the institute.

Therefore, it explains my temporary absence during these weeks. As soon as I have the test to guarantee that I am no longer infected, I will gladly return to class.

Which sentence needs another comma?

1. Miss Allen, our science teacher, is very good.
2. Miss Allen, who is our teacher, is very good.
3. Our teacher Miss Allen, is very good.
4. We like our teacher, Miss Allen.

Answers

Answer:

3. Our teacher Miss Allen, is very good

Explanation:

Looking at these answer choices, there seems to be two different instances in which we need commas. First, whenever a proper name of someone is being identified. In these answer choices, the teacher is being identified as Miss Allen. When this is happening, her name should be between commas. Here's an example of what this looks like in another sentence:

"My neighbor, Jennifer, is very kind."

The name Jennifer in that example must be with commas since she is being identified with her proper name.

Second, any interruptions within sentences should have commas since they are disrupting the main idea of the sentence. In these answer choices, the term, " who is our teacher," is interrupting the main idea, therefor requiring commas. Here's an example of what that would look like:

"My cat, who's very grumpy, bit me earlier."

"Who's very grumpy," would be the interruption in that sentence!

Finally, we can apply this knowledge to our answer choices to find out which one is missing a comma. In the first two choices, our interruptions both have commas around them, so they are not missing any. The third choice has a comma after, "Miss Allen," but it also needs one before it. The fourth choice uses a proper comma with the proper name, so the only choice that is missing a comma is choice 3. That sentence, if correct, would read, "Our teacher, Miss Allen, is very good."

What sentence shows the correct use of the dash?

I am so happy that you got the job—that I will well, just wait and see.

I am so happy that—you got the job that I will well, just wait and see.

I am so happy that you got the job that I will—well, just wait and see.

I am so happy that you got the job—that I will well,—just wait and see.

Answers

Answer:

The fourth one.

Explanation:

This is tough to explain. Basically, dashes make you take a breath before continuing your sentence. This is fitting as the fourth one is divided into two sentences that can make sense on their own.

The others are incorrect, because they use a dash in the middle of a sentence. The halves don't make sense on their own.

The sentence 'I am so happy that you got the job—that I will, well, —just wait and see' correctly uses a dash, hence option D is correct.

What is the use of dash?

Dash is used as a range and pauses in a sentence. A dash is a small horizontal line that writes in the middle of a line of a sentence, It is longer than a hyphen and is generally used to explain a range or a pause.

The example of a dash is used in the sentence 'I am so happy that you got the job—that I will, well, —just wait and see'.

If it is used at the bottom of the text, it becomes a symbol of an underscore, not a dash.

It is used to separate a group of words, not to separate a word, as a hyphen does.

Therefore, option D given in the question correctly depicts the use of a dash.
