Read the excerpt from "The I Devil and Tom Walker": "You shall lend money at two per cent a month." "Egad, I'll charge four!" replied Tom Walker.
"You shall extort bonds, foreclose mortgages, drive the merchants to bankruptcy-" "I'll drive them to the devil," cried Tom Walker. "You are the
usurer for my money!" said black-legs with delight. "When will you want the rhino?" "This very night." "Done!" said the devil. "Done!" said Tom Walker.
So they shook hands and struck a bargain. A few days' time saw Tom Walker seated behind his desk in a counting house in Boston. His reputation for
a ready-moneyed man, who would lend money out for a good consideration, soon spread abroad. What seems to be Tom's prime motivation in

Friends by J. Robbins "Hey, Christy, what are you doing tonight?" asked Myshonda. "We're trying to decide what movie to go see. I think Giant Shape-Shifting Robots 2 sounds good, but Beth wants to see Revelations of a Shopping Fanatic. What do you think?" Christy smiled at her friends and shook her head. "Sorry, guys," she replied. "I can't go to a movie tonight. It's my brother Matt's birthday, and I'm going to bake a cake for him." Beth looked annoyed. "I wish you'd said something earlier," said Beth. "I was kind of counting on you being there." Her friends rolled their eyes. "Anyway, back in the real world, where everything doesn't revolve around Beth," laughed Myshonda. "I didn't know you had a brother, Christy. I've never heard you talk about him." "I like to wait until I know people pretty well before I introduce them to Matt," Christy said. "He has Down syndrome, and it can make some people uncomfortable." "Are you kidding me?" asked Beth in a horrified voice. "Your brother is sick? Does that mean you're contagious or something?" "No, Beth," explained Christy. "Matt's condition is a result of a problem with his chromosomes. He's not contagious, and neither am I. He just develops at a different rate than the rest of us." "He doesn't, like, have to wear diapers or something, does he?" asked Beth. Myshonda gasped and turned red in embarrassment. "Beth!" she said angrily. "Why can't you ever think before you open your big mouth?" Christy smiled at Myshonda. "Don't worry," she told her friends. "I've had to put up with all kinds of rude comments when it comes to my brother. It's taught me to be more thoughtful about other people, though. I try to find the good in everybody, even when it's nearly impossible to see." Beth sighed loudly and looked at her watch. "Well, this has been a regular afterschool special," she said. "But we'd better hurry up if we want to make that movie." "On second thought," said Myshonda. "If you wouldn't mind, Christy, I'd like to walk with you for a while. I want to become a nurse after graduation, and I'd like to learn more about Down's syndrome." "What about me?" asked Beth as her friends walked away.
How are the characters of Myshonda and Beth different?

Personally I believe the dress code is a majorly wrong policie every time they talk about it; it revolves solely around women for the majority of the time or it's only reinforced towards women. In my gym class when we would be outside and it was over 90 degrees my teacher would allow guys to take their gym shirts off and be shirtless but wouldn't allow girls to take their gym shirts off and be in a sports bra if that's the case no one should be able to take their shirts off if there to hot. They will dresscode you for having your underwear peek above your pants slightly if you bend over but allow guys to walk around with their shorts higher than their underwear but it's okay because it's “different” because it's on a guy and not “revealing”. Growing up with these schools dress codes have honestly just told women to cover up because were distracting the boys what about us tho? Sending us down to the office giving detentions because our bra is showing or were wearing a tank top making us leave class and lose time in class learning to change or get in trouble while the boys who are being "distracted" by us are in class learning why not just teach boys self control when they see a bra strap? it's just overall a very flawed and honestly wrong system. It makes a lot of women and girls feel as if they were seen as objects and that's why I think schools should reconsider the way they do their dress code.

How does the author use the language and dialogue in Chunk 1 to reveal how men see the relative advantages of men and women? Use details from the text to support your answer.

Answers

Hello. You did not say what text this question refers to, which makes it impossible for your question to be answered. However, I will try to help you in the best possible way.

In order for the author to be able to use the dialogue and language of a text to show how men see the relative advantages of men and women, it is necessary that the author uses a diction and creates speech for the characters that show the differences between the genres both biologically and socially. These differences can even be portrayed in a stereotypical way if the author wishes to show the wrong thinking of these men, or their inability to make social assessments based on facts.

Which best describes the technique used in lines 4-8 (“the branch . . . ground”) ?
(A) Cases of deprivation are traced back to a single incident.
(B) Details of agricultural setbacks provide historical context.
(C) Accounts of successive catastrophes establish the poem’s central meaning.
(D) Descriptions of hardships among humans mirror those in the animal world.
(E) Examples of dearth in nature accumulate to provide emphasis.

Answers

Answer:

The correct answer is option (E) Examples of dearth in nature accumulate to provide emphasis.

Explanation:

This question is incomplete. Here are the lines missing:

Boll-weevil’s coming, and the winter’s cold,

Made cotton-stalks look rusty, seasons old,

And cotton, scarce as any southern snow,

Was vanishing; the branch, so pinched and slow,

Failed in its function as the autumn rake;

Drouth fighting soil had caused the soil to take

All water from the streams; dead birds were found

In wells a hundred feet below the ground—

Such was the season when the flower bloomed.

These lines correspond to the poem November Cotton Flower.

In it a description is made of how the southern lands are modified throughout the autumn, showing the things that are lost but always seeing the best for the future.

Emphasis is placed on the drought to show how disastrous it was, even killing the birds. Everything named in these lines are examples of dearth in nature accumulate to provide emphasis.
