The faithful servant is accomplishing the tasks, while the princess is deciding what to do once each task is accomplished. The king and the wise bird are static characters because their speech sets up the action in the story, but they do not really participate in the challenges. While the faithful servant is revealed through his actions, and the princess decides on a course of action based on what is revealed, the king and the wise bird are not part of the central action of the plot.

There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself.
