Grendel only exhibits the most rudimentary human traits in the first Beowulf epic.
However, he is a smart and temperamental monster in Grendel, capable of both illogical emotional outbursts and intellectual thought. Grendel tells the tale from his point of view. Consequently, he is not regarded as a killing machine. The situation is completely different in Beowulf. It is believed that Grendel is a monster that terrorizes Hrothgar's populace. Grendel certainly provides a first-person view of what it's like to be a monster. He appears to see things that he shouldn't be able to see, but he also can read other people's minds.

When limestone reacts with acid rain the calcite dissolves.
Acid rain is a broad term that includes all forms of precipitation containing acidic components such as sulfuric and nitric acids that fall from the atmosphere to the ground in wet or dry form. This can be rain, snow, fog, hail or even acid dust.
Sulfuric acid, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid in polluted air and rain react with calcite in marble and limestone, dissolving the calcite. Exposed areas of buildings and statues show rough surfaces, worn materials, and loss of sculptural detail. Stone face material can be lost anywhere or only in more reactive areas.
Protected areas of stone buildings and monuments can be expected to be immune to acid rain. However, in protected areas of limestone and marble buildings and monuments, detached darkened crust can be seen in some places, exposing the crumbling rock underneath. This black crust is mostly composed of gypsum, a mineral formed from the reaction between calcite, water, and sulfuric acid. Gypsum is water soluble.
