Read this excerpt from "Mad Cow, Furious Farmer."

The disease was first detected in England in 1986, though some scientists think the very first cases started at least ten years before. Cows usually eat only grass and other plants, but farmers had been feeding them a meat and bone mixture that made the cows plumper. But somehow, at least one batch of the mixture had become contaminated with what was then an unknown killer: a prion.

By 1993, British farmers were reporting up to one thousand new cases of BSE a week. Governments all around the world reacted by increasing testing for the disease and not allowing any cows to be eaten if they were at risk of having the disease. As sheep can also get a prion disease called scrapie, they were tested as well. Farmers were angry that they were losing their livestock, and nobody knew how to protect cows and people from the disease.

Consumers were also in a panic when they learned about BSE, and for a very good reason: prions are infectious. If you eat a prion from a "mad cow” or sheep, you are at risk for developing a human version of BSE. The public felt betrayed that their governments had underreacted to the problem or covered it up.

Eventually, in 1997, governments began to ban farmers from feeding their livestock high-risk meat and bone mixtures. With that ban, the epidemic quickly peaked, and by 2010 had largely disappeared. Over the years, half a million cows and two hundred people had been killed by prions.

In the end, the BSE epidemic was a watershed moment, or turning point, in public health. Citizens were enraged at their governments for having kept prions a secret. Governments, who had lost the public trust, struggled to find the best way to communicate health risks without creating unnecessary panic.

How does the author's use of chronology help support the idea that the BSE epidemic was a watershed moment, or turning point, in government use of law to support public health?

A.The author lays out a timeline to show how scientific discoveries made governments less likely to make laws for public health.

B.The author makes it clear that prions were always known to be dangerous and that scientists discovered them to be the cause of mad cow disease.

C.The author discusses how the mad cow disease epidemic ended only about twenty-five years after it first became a problem.

D.The author shows how frustrated people were that nothing was done about a disease until over ten years after it was discovered.

What are the differences in the connotation of persistent, headstrong, and stubborn

Answers

Reality check: Have you mistaken stubbornness for persistence?

To put it simply, Persistence is single-directed towards the aim unaffected by any distractions but stubbornness is when you do whatever you feel like no matter whether the act is for or against the goal you decided before.

You may think you are persistent but actually being stubborn. If you are stubborn, you will do what you want at a particular moment. But if you are persistent, you will always take steps towards your goal, not what you want to do compulsively at that moment.

Persistence is NOT something that you can build once and for all. It's a continuous and conscious process. How? Because every moment before doing anything you will have to check if it will really take you closer to what you decided as your goal. You will have to be straight with yourself and see that your act is not compulsive and distracted in any way.

If you are stubborn, you keep changing directions every now and then, thus reducing your chances to reach your goal. You may still reach your goal sometimes but by accident or luck, not by a sure method. That's why in most cases, stubborn people fail to be persistent and consequently never succeed. They always let themselves be ruled by their mind which is distracted easily and never live the way they really want. Therefore, Persistence Empowers You while Stubbornness leads to your Downfall.

Now, are you Confused like me if you are stubborn or persistent? Well then, that's good. If you are in the doubt that you are doing something in persistence or stubbornness, you will choose to do the best for yourself. When you exercise your choice you use your intelligence and become aware.

Another question may arise now - Why do even persistent people give up on what they wanted to do?

Let me clear you that it is an absolute Myth.

Your Persistence can NEVER be affected by challenges and grave situations. Persistence is completely independent of external conditions. It is something that you Develop Within Yourself.

What leads you to give up in difficult situations is the fearful thoughts and emotions that YOU CREATE within yourself and Let it Enslave You.

So, if you are conscious enough, you will definitely be persistent. Let's work on that and create a more conscious and responsible youth with a tremendous sense of purpose and inclusiveness

Lessing's childhood involved going out into nature and enjoying it as best as she could until her mother would tell her to stop and be a proper woman. Lessing lived after World War I from which his father suffered injuries that prevented him from walking again.

On her walk toward the boutique, Sara frantically kept counting the money in her wallet. This should be enough to purchase a gown for prom night, she thought anxiously. Tucking her money safely in her bag, Sara walked towards a renowned boutique. She nervously entered the boutique and navigated her way through the crowd of enthusiastic high school students. After an hour of browsing, Sara finally spotted a pink colored prom gown with pearl embellishments on it. Sara instantly fell in love with the gown and decided to buy it for the prom. She asked the sales girl at the boutique for the price of the gown, and much to Sara's dismay, she realized that she wouldn't be able to buy it. Disappointed and miserable, Sara walked back home. She thought to herself, I wish I had managed to save up more! Sara kept sulking throughout the day. When Sara's mother learned the reason behind Sara's foul mood, she came up with the brilliant idea of recycling Sara's old blue gown. The next day she bought various beads, pearls, and sequins to embellish her old gown. Although Sara was unsure, she helped her mom recycle her old gown.
