When we think of America, we think of the land of the free and democracy. On the other hand, some of history has made it hard to celebrate what we are supposed to stand for. What items in our history might seem shameful or hard to celebrate?
Answer:
Answered below.
Explanation:
Our history of racial segregation and inequality is shameful and cannot be celebrated. Ownership of slaves, making slaves work in cotton fields and other hard labour, oppression of blacks and other minority ethnic groups in the early days of our country, civil rights abuses and discrimination and ultimately the civil war, are all shameful events in our history.
The arrests and dehumanisation of Americans of Japanese ethnicity after the Pearl Harbour attacks, locking them away in inhumane camps and denying their rights to freedom was another event in our history which was shameful and not representative of the freedom and democracy which we stand for.
Thankfully a lot has changed since these periods, but we must do more to continue to protect our democracy and freedom.
Consider Harrison’s attitude. What might the author be trying to say about society?
Answer:
Assuming you're talking about the "Harrison Bergeron" story, the author is basically trying to say that trying to equalize everyone isn't truly worth it as it will just bring more misery and unfairness for everyone. In that story, Harrison was the only one that seemed happy due to the fact that he refused to submit and go through with the equalizing process. Now I've only seen the film but Harrison in the film is quoted saying "You haven't made everybody equal. You've made them the same. And there's a big difference". Essentially by making everybody equal, everyone is the same. There is nothing that truly distinguishes one person from another if they are truly equal. Now whether that is a good thing or a bad thing, that is truly up to one's interpretation. Harrison's attitude was contagious and he looked strong and fulfilled due to following his own ideals. Everyone else was the opposite due to the fact that they couldn't do their own thing because of "equality" being for everyone.
Explanation:
Does eliminating advantages, differences and competition work to eliminate prejudices (racism, sexism, ageism, etc.)? Why/why not?
Answer:
If it's possible, it will take a long time. Short answer: No. Long Answer: Maybe
Explanation:
I believe it necessarily wouldn't eliminate it all the way. This is due to the fact that we as a society have set certain stereotypes for races, sexes, etc. that would be hard to overcome due to certain peoples mindsets and the way people have been taught. There will always be advantages, differences, and other things that will eventually lead to some sort of prejudice among society.
Such as the biggest thing that will take much effort to eliminate is simply the wealthy people in society. Due to wealthy people in society, “During the last few decades, the economic rules of the game were changed, by wealthy individuals and corporations... There have also been cycles of great inequality in our country's past. In the 1880s, as the United States went through the industrial revolution, there was grotesque inequality as the richest 1 percent owned an estimated 50 percent of all private wealth...Yet today, about one out of five households in the United States has zero or negative wealth. This means they literally have no financial reserves to fall back on in times of trouble or, in fact, they owe more than they own. The percentage of households with zero or negative net worth doubled in the last thirty years, increasing from 9.2% in 1962 to 18.5% in 1995” (pg.171-179). Just with the wealthy people, applying that to your question of course, would be hard. Though looking at it, someone has to own a company, someone has to be at the top, therefore wealthy people will never go away in a sense and that advantage and difference can't be overcome.
Now if you simply want to look at advantages and differences between sexism, that's a whole different story. Us as a society, as I said, have set these certain stereotypes throughout the years that would be hard to overcome, such as Patriarchy and Toxic Masculinity. “Patriarchy...Is the biggest hinderance to our success. We all had these great dreams and stuff when we were little kids, but at some point it was more important for us to be tough. It was more important to us to not back down...To buy into toxic masculinity...Put the patriarchal expectations that the world had on us before our own goals” (30:56-31:22). This can apply to racism as well. People have been taught to handle their own and if it's a male, handle stuff for women too. It is continuing to be taught and kids learn it and grow up with these ideas.
If we want to eliminate certain advantages, differences, and such, it has to start from the base. That being the children. We have to teach kids the "right" morals and values so that they can apply that to their future and to the next generations.
In theory it would seem that eliminating advantages and differences between such would eliminate prejudice but I simply don't see that happening. If it does, it will take a while

Why do you think Jacobs chose a monkey's paw as the talisman? Is there symbolism attached to a monkey that isn't associated with another animal?
Answer:
Because he could create his own legend about the monkey's paw, since there is no symbolism attached to them in the real world.
In Indian culture there is a symbolism linked to the monkey that is not linked to any other animal. In this culture, the monkey symbolizes the soul. This symbolism was also used by Jacobs to demonstrate that the greatest desires of the soul can be very destructive.
Explanation:
"A monkey's paw" is a short story written by W.W. Jacobs, which tells the story of a family that suffered serious problems after making requests to a monkey's paw with supernatural powers.
That's because the monkey's paw had the ability to place any order, but it would cost an expensive price for it.
Jacobs was probably inspired by Indian monkey-related symbology to write this story. Probably, the paw was the chosen part of the monkey to represent power, because there is no mythology related to the macao's paw, so jacobs was free to create his own story about it.

An example topic-Leaving a toxic friendship( I'll use this prompt to help give you examples)
Intro- First start with a sentence that will hook your readers. Topic sentence example based on example prompt, I did it, I really did it. I just broke our 7 years of friendship.
Then you want to explain what just happened. Don't tell the whole story though. Tell who the characters and what problem you're going through. Tell something about yourself. Make it at least 6-7 sentences.
Body- Start talking about what the incident is. What is happening? I knew it was hurting me and I let it keep on hurting me.......I showed the courage to talk to her and end this.....I learned to get rid of the people in my life who are making me feel like I'm not good enough.
