Due friday 9AM:When howling winds whip up in Earth’s largest deserts, it’s time to head for cover. Billowing gusts kick up sand, forming walls of fast-moving dust that can block the sun. “You can’t see anything that’s more than a few meters away,” says Joseph Prospero, an atmospheric chemist at Florida’s University of Miami, who studies dust storms. Grains of sand pelt against your skin like thousands of piercing needles, and musty-smelling grit coats your mouth and nostrils. “The amount of dust that gets in the air feels suffocating,” says Prospero. For people who live in and around the deserts along Earth’s midsection—such as Central Asia’s Gobi Desert and Africa’s Sahara Desert—dust storms frequently disrupt daily routines. “When a storm kicks up, you just have to go inside and wait it out,” says Prospero. But scientists have discovered that the effects of dust storms extend much farther than the deserts’ sandy borders. Global winds lift dust from Asia and Africa and carry it to other continents thousands of miles away, including North America. Now, many scientists are concerned that the grimy visitor may be putting people and other organisms in danger. Hoping to learn more about the storms’ potential health risks, researchers are following the dust trails. WORLD TOUR During the Asian dust storm season—from March through May—winds frequently blow dust clouds eastward across the Pacific Ocean. In just a week, the dust can complete a journey from Asia, over the Pacific, and across the entire United States. As Asia’s storms settle, windstorms begin kicking up dust in Africa’s deserts. Between May and October, African dust drifts westward across the Atlantic Ocean, making its way toward the southeastern coast of the U.S. and islands in the Caribbean Sea. FOUL CLOUDS The billows of traveling dust disrupt air quality—creating hazy skies along their routes. Eventually, the winds slow and can no longer keep the sandy particles airborne. The dust drops from the sky, depositing a gritty film on every exposed surface. Studies have shown that this falling desert dust is actually an important nutrient for plants. “Researchers think that rain forests in the northern Hawaiian Islands are nurtured by Asian dust events,” says Dale Griffin, a microbiologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. 5 10 15
What is the author’s central claim about the windblown dust moving from continent to continent? Use two details from the passage to support your response.According to the author of “A Soft Spot for Crows,” the fact that crows live in cities or towns is an example of their intelligence. Read the excerpt from "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" by Patrick Henry.

I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House.

Based on the excerpt, what does the author want the reader to believe?

The future actions of the British are uncertain.
The British are too strong to defeat in battle.
The actions of the British have given reason to hope.
The British have given people no reason to trust them.

Answers

It is the last choice, “The British have given no reason to trust them.” This is because they are talking about judging by the past and the british have taken control and not been trustworthy in the past, so how can they trust them for the future?

Please help asap!!! Parachute introduction. Please write it like an 8th grader would!!!

Answers

Answer:Leonardo da Vinci conceived the idea of the parachute in his writings, and the Frenchman Louis-Sebastien Lenormand fashioned a kind of parachute out of two umbrellas and jumped from a tree in 1783, but André-Jacques Garnerin was the first to design and test parachutes capable of slowing a man’s fall from a high altitude.

Garnerin first conceived of the possibility of using air resistance to slow an individual’s fall from a high altitude while a prisoner during the French Revolution. Although he never employed a parachute to escape from the high ramparts of the Hungarian prison where he spent three years, Garnerin never lost interest in the concept of the parachute. In 1797, he completed his first parachute, a canopy 23 feet in diameter and attached to a basket with suspension lines.

On October 22, 1797, Garnerin attached the parachute to a hydrogen balloon and ascended to an altitude of 3,200 feet. He then clambered into the basket and severed the parachute from the balloon. As he failed to include an air vent at the top of the prototype, Garnerin oscillated wildly in his descent, but he landed shaken but unhurt half a mile from the balloon’s takeoff site. In 1799, Garnerin’s wife, Jeanne-Genevieve, became the first female parachutist. In 1802, Garnerin made a spectacular jump from 8,000 feet during an exhibition in England. He died in a balloon accident in 1823 while preparing to test a new parachute.

What are 2 examples of foreshadowing in the Giver in chapters 9-14?

Answers

Answer:

I can't remember exactly what happened in those chapter's but I believe that an example would be that the author kept repeating “It was almost December,” “now with December approaching,” showing that something important was happening in December,  and then there's when after Jonas is named the next Receiver, the Elder says, “We failed in our last selection.” is foreshadowing of- that Rosemary, the girl in question, requested her own release. Even then we do not know exactly what it means to be released, and the revelation that Rosemary was the Giver's own daughter is withheld till nearly the end of the book.

Explanation:

In the early days of arctic exploration, dogsled was often the only way to travel. The ice, snow, and extremely cold weather made using other animals, such as horses, impossible. Snowmobiles were not invented yet. Most explorers journeyed by ship until the ice made it impossible to continue. Then, they would switch to dogsled. The dogs, working together, were a well-oiled machine that could cover long distances in the cold.

Sled dogs needed to have long, warm coats to survive the arctic temperatures. They had to be fast and able to run for long distances while pulling a heavy load. Most importantly, they had to work together as a team. This made northern dogs, such as Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes, the best choices for the sled teams. These dogs have long coats, with a double layer of fur to keep out the cold, and they have wide paws with webbed toes that act like snowshoes. They have been bred for more than 9,000 years to be working dogs in extreme winter weather. They are friendly, team-oriented, and purposeful dogs. In the days of the arctic explorers, the physical features and determined personalities of the sled dogs made long journeys in harsh conditions possible.

To be in the best condition for pulling heavy loads, the dogs needed a diet that was high in fat. They ate whale and seal blubber and fatty meats during their long journeys, which kept them strong and gave them energy to keep going. The dogs' paws also needed special care to make sure that they did not become injured by sharp ice or extreme cold. Treating the paws with fat or wax helped the dogs to run safely and comfortably.

Although the days of arctic explorers are long past, sled dogs continue to run through the snow and ice of the North. Dogsledding is now recognized as a sport, with many competitions taking place all over the world. One of the most well-known of these is the Iditarod, a race of almost 1,000 miles. It commemorates the Great Race of Mercy that took place in 1925 when dog sled teams were the only hope of a town that needed life-saving medicine. The race takes 8–11 days to complete and is run regardless of weather conditions. Teams of twelve or more dogs train with their handlers for years before competing. The race is long and one of the most challenging in the world. Dogs and their handlers must be in top physical condition to have any chance of winning.

During the race, the dogs get multiple rest stops and are checked by veterinarians to make sure they avoid injuries. They eat high-fat, high-protein foods to give them the energy to continue, just like the dogs of the arctic explorers did. With the same determination that drove the dogs of the 1925 Great Race of Mercy, the dogs competing in the Iditarod run through even the worst blizzards and race to win.

Which information would disprove the author's point that sled dogs need a long coat?

Long coats keep the dog's abdomen and legs warm in extreme temperatures.
Long coats get matted with ice and mud, making it difficult to keep clean.
Long coats act as insulating blankets, making the dogs kennels a safe temperature.
Long coats are easy to care for since the dogs shed their coats when it is warm.
