The theater room was quiet as Paulina and Roseanne slipped in through the door and shut it quickly behind them. They looked around in confusion until I called out to them. The identical looks of relief on their faces were almost comical.
“Calm down,” I whispered. “We aren’t doing anything wrong. The founding members of the drama club are allowed into the theater room anytime during school hours. This is perfectly legal.”
“Sure it is,” replied Roseanne. “That’s why you’re wearing all black and hiding behind a desk, right?”
“I’m an actor, Rosie, and we’re very dramatic,” I snapped. “We have to find out what play Dominiquette and the Spacey Invaders are going to present at Talent Night. She had no right to take over the drama club. If we can outperform them onstage, we’ll be back in the club in no time.”
“Maybe we could just meet with Dominiquette and talk about this whole big mess,” said Paulina. I scoffed and continued digging through the drama club’s collection of costumes. Dominiquette was the unofficial leader of the group nicknamed the Spacey Invaders, and she and her cronies had taken over the drama club from me and my friends. She would no sooner listen to me than a spider would listen to a fly.
“Hey, here is something!” Roseanne called out. “It’s a skull. Do you think they’re going to do something as predictable as Hamlet?”
“Not likely,” replied Paulina. “I bet that’s left over from last year.”
“I found it!” I screeched, holding a stuffed seagull over my head in triumph. “They must be planning to do Chekhov’s The Seagull. It’s the only explanation.” The three of us stared down at the fake bird with grudging admiration. As far as I knew, no high school drama club in Chambersville had ever attempted something as ambitious as The Seagull. Dominiquette was not just ambitious—she was downright devious!
“How are we going to beat them now?” asked Paulina dejectedly.
“I have no idea,” I replied. “But we only have two days to figure it out.”

In 2006, beekeepers throughout the United States began to notice something new—and troubling. Adult honeybees, known as worker bees, were disappearing from their hives, seemingly abandoning them. Few or no dead bees were found in the hives, while the queen and larvae were alive and well but without the swarm of worker bees that typically attended them to keep them alive. What had happened?

The phenomenon became so widespread that it soon received a name, Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) . There was no denying that CCD was a problem; after all, American agriculture depends on the work of honeybees and other pollinators. At least three-quarters of the crops grown in the United States depend on honeybee pollination for their survival. These include such staples as strawberries, blueberries, apples, broccoli, asparagus, and almonds. Without them, both farmers and anyone who enjoys fresh fruits and vegetables will suffer.

But what is causing this problem? Scientists have rigorously studied a variety of possible causes, ranging from genetically modified crops to climate change to cell phone towers. Sadly, nothing has shown to be the cause of the problem. The most likely culprits are pathogens, or disease-causing organisms. These have been found in larger numbers in colonies affected by CCD than in those unaffected. But these pathogens have included various viruses and bacteria, some found in greater concentrations in different parts of the country. If CCD is caused by a single disease, identifying that disease will be difficult.

The CCD epidemic is most likely the result of multiple causes—pathogens, poor nutrition, pesticides, lack of genetic diversity, and habitat loss. Efforts to prevent colony loss have been mildly successful. The number lost has declined each year since 2008. But until a solution to this problem is found, CCD will remain a concern that will threaten not only the future of bees, but also of the people who rely on the food that they help produce.

1 When the Pilgrims came to Cape Cod, they sent out Miles Standish and some other men to look through the country and find a good place for them to settle. Standish tried to find some of the Native Americans in order to make friends with them, but the Native Americans ran away whenever they saw him coming. One day he found a heap of sand. He knew it had been lately piled up, because he could see the marks of hands on the sand where the Native Americans had patted it down. Standish and his men dug up this heap. They soon came to a little old basket full of Native American corn. When they had dug further, they found a very large new basket full of fine corn, which had been lately gathered.

2 The Europeans, who had never seen it before, thought Native American corn was very beautiful. Some of the ears were yellow, some were red. On other ears blue and yellow grains were mixed. Standish and his men said it was a "very goodly sight."

3 They wanted the corn for seed. They made up their mind to pay the Native Americans whenever they could find them. The next summer they found out who were the owners of this buried corn, and paid them for all the corn they had taken. If they had not found this corn, they would not have had any to plant the next spring, and so they would have starved to death.
