Two countries produce coal and iron. Country A can produce a maximum of
500 tons of coal per day or 250 tons of iron. Country B can produce a
maximum of 900 tons of coal per day or 300 tons of iron. Which statement
best describes this situation?
A. Country A has an absolute advantage producing iron.
B. Country A has an absolute advantage producing coal.
C. Country A has a comparative advantage producing iron.
D. Country A has a comparative advantage producing coal.
Answer: C
Explanation: To determine which statement best describes this situation, we need to compare the opportunity costs of each country.
The opportunity cost of producing one ton of coal in Country A is 0.5 tons of iron (500 tons of coal/250 tons of iron).
The opportunity cost of producing one ton of coal in Country B is 0.33 tons of iron (300 tons of iron/900 tons of coal).
Therefore, Country B has a lower opportunity cost of producing coal than Country A, indicating that Country B has a comparative advantage in producing coal.
On the other hand, the opportunity cost of producing one ton of iron in Country A is 2 tons of coal (250 tons of iron/500 tons of coal), while the opportunity cost of producing one ton of iron in Country B is 3 tons of coal (900 tons of coal/300 tons of iron).
Therefore, Country A has a lower opportunity cost of producing iron than Country B, indicating that Country A has a comparative advantage in producing iron.
Therefore, the statement that best describes this situation is:
C. Country A has a comparative advantage producing iron.

Although some have suggested that government policies at the time may have contributed to the severity of the depression, these events were largely unintended and not the result of a conspiracy or war.

write a paragraph including three reasons why the caravel was an important development for european explorers
It made long naval journeys go by faster, carried more cargo, let them sail against the wind, and was less expensive than other types of ships.
By modern standards, the Caravel was a relatively small ship. As a highly maneuverable watercraft, the ship's bottom protruded only a small distance below the water's surface. The Caravel had triangular "lateen" sails for a lot of its life. These sails, combined with the boat's remarkable maneuverability, allowed it to sail into the wind in a zigzag pattern known as "beating to windward."
This ship quickly became the backbone of the European Age of Exploration after the Spanish and Portuguese realized its potential as an offshore fishing vessel. The Caravel quickly became the ship of choice for many explorers thanks to the addition of square sails, which increased power when sailing with the wind. Other minor modifications followed. It has been hypothesized that two of Columbus' ships, the Nia and the Pinta, were Caravels designed specifically for transatlantic travel.
Clearly, European transportation was revolutionized by the Caravel. By enabling them to travel further and faster, this technology allowed European explorers, fishermen, and merchants to "expand their horizons." It could be argued that it was a big part of the New World's rapid colonization.
