The son of Thomas Sumner and Sarah Graham, William Graham Sumner was born on October 30, 1840, in Paterson, New Jersey. His father was an advocate for free trade and temperance, despite not having received any formal education.
William Graham Sumner, a Social Darwinist and Conservative thinker, has consistently tracked the development of social mores, folkways, and customs. He thought that all attempts at social change were futile because these forces had evolved spontaneously throughout the period of evolution. Sumner said that attempts to alter the "natural principles of social growth" would make it impossible for humanity to thrive. Sumner's ideas were founded on observations of specifics and were informed by his training in the principles of inductive empiricism. Sumner described ethnocentrism as superior views toward one's own group in relation to other groups. He succeeded his longtime ideological rival Lester F. Ward as the second president of the American Sociological Association, holding the position from 1908 to 1909.
