Sandra was not in a good mood. The first night in a new house was always hard, but that wasn’t the worst of it. She had just found out that she would have to share her bedroom with her new stepsister, Reyna. In her old house, Sandra had been the only child. She hadn’t had to share anything with anybody—and she liked it that way. But now her mother had married Reyna’s father, and everything was different. Sandra’s mind was a knot of worries and fears.

Sandra’s mother stepped into the bedroom. She saw Sandra seated on the bed, staring sadly at the floor. “Sandra, I was hoping we could talk about Reyna. You know that she’s transferring to your middle school from her old one, and it’s hard to meet new people. Why don’t you help her by introducing her to your friends?”
