The withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces at the end of the Afghan war and the 2021 Taliban offensive in Afghanistan led to a massive evacuation of foreigners and some vulnerable Afghan citizens. After the fall of Kabul and the collapse of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on 15 August 2021, Hamid Karzai International Airport remained the only outward route not controlled by the Taliban and guarded by thousands of NATO forces.
The evacuation operation was one of the largest airlift operations in history. Between August 14 and 25, the United States alone evacuated approximately 82,300 people, including US citizens, special immigrant visa applicants and other vulnerable Afghans, from Hamid Karzai International Airport. A total of over 122,000 were airlifted overseas.
