En el camino se encuentran con treinta o cuarenta molinos de viento, y Don Quijote le dice a Sancho que son gigantes y que irán a la batalla con ellos. Sancho lo corrige y le dice que no son gigantes sino molinos de viento, pero Don Quijote insiste en su fantasía y los ataca. Le arroja la hoja, pero cuando un viento fuerte sopla la hoja, rompe su lanza y lleva a Don Quijote y Rocinante por delante. Sancho va a ayudarlos y le dice a Don Quijote que bien le había dicho que no eran gigantes. Don Quijote cree que fue el encantador Frestón quien convirtió a los gigantes en molinos para quitarle la gloria a su derrota.
Pasan esa noche afuera descansando entre unos árboles, y Don Quijote rompe un ramo de uno de ellos para reemplazar su lanza ya que había leído que otro caballero hizo lo mismo cuando se quedó sin espada. Al día siguiente, Don Quijote le dice a Sancho que solo puede ayudarlo en la batalla si es contra gente baja y sinvergüenza, pero que no debe interferir si es un altercado entre caballeros hasta que reciba la orden de caballería.

En el camino ven acercarse a dos frailes y detrás un coche que transporta a una señora vizcaína que se dirige a Sevilla. Don Quijote, sin embargo, cree que son encantadores los que llevan en el coche a alguna princesa secuestrada. Nuevamente Sancho intenta hacerle entender que son frailes y pasajeros en el carro, pero Don Quijote responde que no sabe mucho de aventuras.
Don Quijote se acerca a los frailes, los llama "gente diabólica y enorme" y exige que liberen a las princesas que han secuestrado. Los frailes se asombran de tales acusaciones e insisten en que no son diabólicos ni se llevan a nadie secuestrado. Sin embargo, no logran convencer a Don Quijote, que ataca al primer fraile, dejándolo tirado en el suelo mientras el otro huye.
Sancho comienza a quitarle los hábitos al fraile porque cree que le corresponden como botín de batalla. Llegan dos jóvenes de los frailes y atacan a Sancho. Mientras tanto, Don Quijote habla con la señora que entra en el auto. Él le dice que la única gratitud que quiere por salvarla es que ella regrese a Toboso y le cuente a su ama Dulcinea todo lo que hizo para salvarla. Un escudero vizcaíno que acompaña a la dama oye que esto amenaza a Don Quijote, y los dos comienzan una pelea a espada.
